Title: Rebuilding my 87
Post by conrod on 10/24/10 at 00:57:48

Well I decided to fix the dents in the tanks and repaint the tank, so it seemed like a good idea to do the front and rear guards as well. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. After I had the guards off I decided what the hell lets do it properly. Battery box and air cleaner out she started looking better.
Just painted the cylinder/crankcase/carby. Had a conical air cleaner and she fits in really neatly.
Going to rewire her so the electrics are under seat and wires hidden
Side cases were corroded and needed 240 600 and 1200 grit wet and dry before the aluminium polish started to work, I should take them off and use a polishing wheel but just dont have the energy,,,,never get old.

NOW A QUESTION!!!!!
Been thinking of replacing the tank with a sportster or an "Alien Egg Tank" saw them on ebay, 2.2 gallon capacity.

Also what about running without a passenger seat and those chrome side pieces for a smooth rear end
Any suggestions and comments welcome

conrod, be patient and forge ahead. I don't know how long you've been riding Savages, but unless looks are everything on this project, I'd skip the small tank. Almost everyone here grumbles about the hard seat and small tank. Filling up every hundred miles is not terrible, but I would like to go a little farther between fill ups. But it's yours, so have fun and go for it.

Painting the finned section black--is that for looks or to disguise the ever-leaking oil?

Do yours all leak too? Mine has 3500 miles and has a drip on the rear bolt holding the cylinder head every now and then. Although I dont really have to add oil I keep an eye on it.

Dear Boofer,,,good idea mate, thanks for that advice.
Drums1,,no she doesnt leak oil, I just like look of black fins and case with polished side covers. Black fins increase the thermodynamic transport properties, as long as you use the correct paint, not gloss black

Was the seat recovered?  I sort thought all the two piece  seat's had pleats, or were the fancy optional gel seats with the weave pattren.

Hi T Mack, yes the seat has been recovered by the previous owner.

Had to redo the metal tray under the seat, first one was too shallow.

Finished rewiring this afternoon and she runs, bit of a heart attack though, nothing happened, dead as a doornail, till I remembered to pull in the clutch.

Sunday evening, just painted the guards and tank black, ready for airbrushing, put hem in place just to see how it looks.

Sprayed the tins when I got home this afternoon. As soon as they were touch dry I bolted the rear into place and sat the tank on the frame.
Decided to do the chamelion pearl before airbrushing flames because I just couldnt wait to see what it looked like.
As you walk around the bike it goes from purple to blue to green,,,and sparkles, should look awesome in sunlight (I hope)

Finally back together last night and this morning, Sunday 7th Nov, was the first sunny day for yonks. Took her for a spin, suburb and highway run.
Cruises easily at 110k, with burst up to 140k and she still wanted to go! But a bit iffy in the crosswinds.http://p1.bikepics.com/pics/2010%5C11%5C07%5Cbikepics-2093845-800.jpg
