Title: Newbie; Vacuum hoses Post by ocdave on 10/21/10 at 08:22:44 I just picked up a low mileage '96 non-running Savage. I now have spark but am unable to get the engine to fire. I am in the process of cleaning out the carb. I have identified a couple issues. I appear to be missing a vacuum hose or two. I have searched the service manual and this forum but am unable to find detailed routing pics. Also, the decompression cable is just hanging on by a thread. Would these issues keep the bike from firing? any help would be greatly appreciated |

However there are two outlets that look as if they were vacuum ports, but they ain't, they are vents. With those you just hook a couple of lines to them and run them up along the frame, they do not attach to anything. |

The decomp is there to prevent an issue with starting. If the starter stalls and won't turn over the engine, then you found it. put it in 1st gear push forward till you are thru the compression cycle. Try the button again. Or push the lever over by hand, it's tough, but if you take the cover off you should be able to tweak it a bit with a screwdriver. |

I will re-attach the carb after a good cleaning, route a vacuum hose to the petcock. and see what happens. thanks again. |

Title: Re: Newbie; Vacuum hoses Post by Boofer on 10/21/10 at 18:38:52 ocdave, this may not be a popular answer, but I would spray a little starting fluid into the airbox and try it. Only use an on/off squirt and be prepared for possible backfire or just fire. Usually a towel thrown over the box will extinguish any small fire. Do not do this indoors and don't use too much as it can damage an engine. I have done this on cars, chainsaws mc, etc for years. It lets me know there is spark and timing is ok. Sometimes it will take a weak engine and start it running. If not, you know it's probably not getting fire at the right time, if at all. Then you can look farther. If it won't burn ether, it sure won't burn gas. Boofer |

I borrowed a compression tester from a friend and only recorded 10psi. It looks like I will be tearing down the engine for a look see. The manual said that the cylinder head could be removed without taking out the complete engine only on certain models. Does anybody know if this is the case for a 1995 Savage? |

Title: Re: Newbie; Vacuum hoses Post by Yonuh Adisi on 10/22/10 at 14:56:44 You can pretty much remove the head with the engine still in the frame on most of the models (it depends on the frame tolerances) but it is a big hassle and is much easier to just pull the engine. Besides, pulling the engine will give you opportunity to inspect more in depth to be sure there is no hidden problems. |

Title: Re: Newbie; Vacuum hoses Post by verslagen1 on 10/23/10 at 09:18:38 Removing the engine from the frame is quite easy actually. remove all that you can (starter, carb, wiring) remove all bolts and brackets lay a blanket on the lawn lay the savage down wiggle the engine till it's free turn it up pick up and set on bench. be advised the engine is close to 100 lbs. 7C7D5248533B0 wrote:
