Title: is this it?
Post by B1-66er on 10/15/10 at 20:17:13

So I have an oil leak and after some searching on here, I think I got the right part. It's a small rubber plug about an inch and a half in diameter. However, after lookin a bit more on here, I saw that there is something else that may cause this. And I'd prefer to not have to pull things apart twice if the part I have isn't the fix. So what is the other probable cause? the oil seems like its seeping out where the head connects to the bottom half of the motor. Bear with me, I'm motorcycle stupid.

b1, it does help to have multiple topics for the same problem.
believe it or not, I can't remember (dam what was that song) what the original problem is, if there's no link.

I never made a thread about it

sorry my mistake, you and kris just about talking about the same thing.

head plug shown in his topic.

is the leak between the head and cylinder or cylinder and case?

It seems like it's coming from where the two halves meet. Right side of motor at the front, very close to the cooling channel(don't know proper name, Haha).

The bike is an 88, if that matters

66er, My 2001 was seeping oil when I bought it. Not wanting to tear it down, I tried the easiest fix first. I tightened the cylinder head to cylinder nuts at the front and rear of the jug. They were way loose, and the seep stopped. Two minute job. Couldn't hurt. Like Verslagen asked, is it between the case and jug or the head and jug?

I don't know what that question means

For info,.....
You have 3 major parts to the motor,....
1- The "Block".....or case which is the bottom end...crankshaft, tranny,
2- the "jug"....which is the "cylinder" w/ the cooling fins on it
3- The "cylinder Head",....which bolts to the Jug....or cylinder

Now, the question asked if it is leaking between the cylinder head
and the jug,....or between the jug and the bottom end...or block.

Between the head and jug

Sounds like the same leak everyone gets sooner or later. Personally, on mine, it's not too bad--I just clean up the fins once a week or so and check oil level. I have neither the money nor the ambition to tear it down to fix such a tiny thing. If I ever get rich and have it in for that "engine overhaul", I'll make sure they seal that plug then.

Sorry, 66er. If you get a Clymer manual, the pics will help a lot. Also, I use microfiche on Bike Bandit.com to see how things come apart and, more importantly, go back together. I'm doing like Drums and using degreaser to keep a teardown at bay. Didn't mean to be a smart Alec. Look at the front and rear of your cooling fins. There is a nut on each. Use an open end wrench to just "tug" on them. These hold the head to the cylinder.  Don't overdo it. It really helped mine for a year or so. Good luck.

Clymer manual is on its way. Mine doesn't leak terribly either, but I'm gonna be tearing it apart over the winter anyway. It needs to be bobbed, Haha.

Well I just took it out for a bit and looked. The oil is ending up on the two fins directly above where the head meets the jug. And there may be a tiny but coming from where the two meet

What I did when I had that problem, I took the front nut off and put Blue Loctite on the stud and put the nut back on. It's been dry since two years now.

Your oil ended up in the same place?

the whole thing is gonna get torn apart within the next few months anyway, so maybe ill just take care of everything then

my motor needs black paint, haha

Ah yes, the infamous headcap leak. Wait until you also get the leaks from: speedometer cable mount, alternator wire hole, front pulley shaft seal, starter mount, clutch arm pivot...

The Savage is a cross between an old English bike and a 1960s Dodge truck. It leaks. It doesn't hurt it as long as you remember to occasionally check the oil level.

Shame is that it also has English grade electrical components...
