2009 s40 - 6,128 miles

upgrades:
rejetted carbs w/Dyna jet kit
supertrapp pipe
k&m drop in air filter
super brace fork brace
saddle bag brackets & saddle bags
backrest bought from jrm8486 - great guy who gives great deals!

since accident 2 weeks ago have got used forks (which hubby should have went ahead and bought new ones as he's wearing himself out polishing them to make them look brand new!)
used front rim
used clutch lever
and waiting for brand new front fender and handgrip to come in.

Only issue we've had with the bike was a month after we bought it
we noticed a leak in one of the welds on gas tank.We took it back to the dealership where we got it and got it back one week later with a brand new tank.

See signature for bike.  Bike currently has 11K miles on it.

Bought used in OCT 01, bike had 50 miles on it.

Problems (all fixed):

1.  Head plug oil leak.

2.  Speedometer cable oil leak.

3.  Starter o-ring oil leak.

4.  Petcock leaking fuel into vacuum line (replaced with Raptor petcock).

5.  Front brake switch quit.

6.  Insulator pad fell off of muffler guard.

7.  Rear muffler mounting rubber was distorted and needed replacing.

8.  Speedo housing rattle.

9.  Original battery wore out (bike currently on second battery).

10. Rear tire wore out (bike currently on second rear tire).

Interim poll results for those who cannot see the results:

It's a two peaked distribution with 26 respondents.
One peak at 3-6K and another at 15-25K.

3-6K       19%
6-9K       15%
9-12K       8%
12-15K     8%
15-25K    27%
25-50K    19%
over 50K   4%

Numbers suggest two groups:
1. new or infrequent riders and
2. more experienced riders or those riding older and perhaps more-frequently-used bikes.

Many motorcycles are junked with less than 10K on the odometer, so numbers suggest Savage/S40 bikes are actually ridden, are crashed less often, are maintained, and are reliable.

2006 purchased in March 2009 with 2,900 miles.  2 seasons later, I'm up to about 7,000 miles.

No issues related to the bike functioning <knock on wood>.  My changes have been basically cosmetic or personal preference.

I can't be the only person with more than 50k miles..

I should list what went blewwieee... unfortunately, I think a lot of it is due to treating the poor thing like a dirt bike.

Probably related to dirt bike treatment..  ::)
busted rear gas tank mount
busted rear fender (where the license plate bracket mounts).. x 2
(part caused by having that heavy helmet lock thing behind the license plate)
busted headlight shell
busted muffler mount
front wheel bearing
front fork seal leak, fixed just by cleaning the tubes & replacing oil

Things possibly not related..
Blew the baffles out of 2 HD mufflers.
Headlight rattle
Speedo rattle
shifted to raptor petcock (gas starve at highway speed)
minor oil leak where clutch arm enters case (on list of things to fix)
verslavy put in at about 12k miles.. cover not opened since.
Big Crank battery.. got tired of adding water
many tires, many oil changes, a couple air filters, iridium spark plug just because.

Other things, but they are cosmetic, safety or comfort related.. or I forgot.  Not important to this discussion.

GF's Savage is a 1997 with 8300 miles. She is the third owner and the machine had 2800 miles on it when she bought it in 2002. We have replaced the IRC tires with Metzler 880's, replaced the front brake pads, a new battery, and the brake switch in her forward brake lever. Her valve cover had a small leak and I removed it and cleaned and reapplied new gasket goo from Suzuki. We have added a National Cycle Plexifairing III windshield and Willie & Max saddle bags, the saddle bag bars are OEM. Once a year it gets an oil/filter change, valve check/adjustment, blow out the air cleaner and check adjust all the stuff in the maintenance schedule. At the end of next riding season I think I'm going to have a go at the swing arm bearings and the steering head bearings and see if they need some fresh grease. Since my GF has had her 2006 BMW F650GS she doesn't ride the Savage much any more, I ride it more than she does, post office trips and little errands. She learned how to ride on the Savage and I think it is a good commuter bike. Regards, Jim

Yourguyz! I'm getting close. 45,000 miles on my 02 before I crashed it about a month ago. I know people are getting tired of me bragging about my bike but I've ridden that thing thru like 11 states and most of my riding is above 60 mph. Until I crashed I have never needed a repair. I never had the tank rattle, or leaky head gasket, no oil leaks anywhere actually, I don't know why. All I have done is change tires, spark plug once (iridium) brakes once, front and back and oil changes. Now I have some mirrors, a gas tank, and foot pegs to replace. This spring a friend and I are gonna do another cross country tour and I'm going to try and have 70,000 miles by next fall. I might not make it but I'll get close. Greg D did change the cam chain for me at 33,000 miles. The old one was still good.
02 black Savage
Lancers high performance cam
rejetted
K@N air filter
Supertrapp, running 8 discs
I only use auto  motor oil 50 wt, and have never used first gear once.

1987 Savage--was given to me after sitting in a garage for 7 1/2 years. Only had about 9000 miles on it then. 1st I bought a new battery. Then a used starter. Had to fix the rear flat tire. 2nd summer started out with a new clutch. They boogered it up and it got no oil to top end for 75 miles. Then it sat at the dealer and then back to the repair shop that boogered it up. They put on a used top end, snapping a head bolt in the process. I got it back 3 1/2 months after 1st being towed to the dealer. Has never been the same since. Loss of power, vibrations, oil leaks. Then I had carb problems. I replaced the mirrors. Right now, I have front and rear brakes and oil change to do over the winter. I also need 2 new tires. It really needs an engine overhaul, but I have neither the money or the knowhow to accomplish this feat. So, I'm gonna do the brakes and charge the battery and hope I get 1 more summer out of it.

Watched it turn over 14,000 Tuesday. Now sitting on 14,128. Had a good ride T'giving day. 60 degrees in N Miss, but cold front coming through had lots of gusty wind. 34 degrees this morning; up to 40 all day. Went deer hunting instead of riding. Winter is upon us. Like I said before, I'm good for 40 miles at 40 degrees. Below that, she stays parked. Looking to get several more thousand on the old girl (2001). These bikes are like Briggs and Stratton engines used to be: untouched by heavy govt regulation. I believe if you buy one new, change the oil right, ride it sensibly at the speed limit, and service it regularly, the Savage would run indefinitely. Even wicking the things doesn't seem to hurt them much. Well designed overall. Agreed?

If you spent a fraction of the time on your bike as you do here, your bike would have been done months ago ! ;D ;D ;D

True enough, but the hassle of dragging it out to where I can touch it when Im not doing something else is just too much. I only have limited work space & I dont want to drag ityt out again till Im able to put it all back together.

I'm hoping Santa brings me a bike lift. Such a pain in the arse trying to hump it up onto blocks. Not to mention kneeling on the frozen concrete while working on it. I'm too old for that.

Lowes, knee pads, about 15 bucks. WAY cool. Keeps knees off of cold concrete AND hard concrete,, its a win/win.

Bought used Nov 2006 with 76 miles on her. Did the mods listed. On my third battery (# 2 was my fault) and second set of tires. Normal scheduled maintenance otherwise. Need to check the cam chain sometime. Maybe after Christmas.

Speaking of cold concrete (Which is definitely off subject), old folks here in the South told me that sitting on cold ground or cold concrete while you work causes hemorrhoids.  :-[

8757 miles

A '96 I picked up two days ago.

Problems?
- Leaking petcock causing a crankcase full of gas
- Getting the left foot control off, because the lower bolt (that is also an engine mount bolt) hits the tab on the kickstand
- Breaking loose Philips head screws that have way too much thread lock and/or rust on them
- The occasional weird 11mm or 13mm nut (and why must the stem nut be a bigger size than the fork caps?)
- Taking a chunk out of a knuckle while trying to wrestle the battery box out
- Trying to work the drive belt off the rear sprocket so I could remove the rear wheel so I could remove the fender and all the crap bolted to it

But it's finally to this stage:

My bike "mileage" depends on whether you're asking about:

- the chasis:  ~78,000 miles, still pretty much stock
- the speedometer:  (salvage replacement) shows ~44,000
- the current engine:  (salvage replacement) ~27,000

I've had enough problems that I'm an experienced Suzuki Savage Remove-Replace-Rebuild-Remodify Technician! ;)

I finally remembered to check and actually remembered when I came back inside.  12750 miles.

I have not have any "major problems"  I did replaced the cam chain and chain tensioner, more of a preventative thing than anything else.  I also fixed the plug leak thing.

Yep, suit and tie for a preacher.  I was on my way to preach a funeral on a rather chilly October day.  Those suit pants do not block the wind chill near as well as jeans do.  I was going any way, it was a prett day and I figured I just as well ride the bike.  And I think Jack, the guest of honor at the funeral, would have approved.

An '08 with tad over 20,000. Oil and filter every 1,000 miles (don't flame me!), installed a Versalvy, a Raptor petcock, drilled out the brass cover for the fuel mix, fixed the speedo rattle; and performed a modified Diamond Jim seat fix for my backside. No leaks, no hums (except for the slightly annoying vibration/rattle of the belt guard at low speeds), and no problems!  :)
