Title: Another question...
Post by Edgar on 10/13/10 at 15:15:55

I don't have a clymers manual yet so I have to ask another question. I'm trying to take off the forks to paint them, but I'm stuck with the front tire. How do you get it off? Just from looking at it my first instinct was to go after the bolt on the opposite side of the caliper but looking at it, well I don't know if that suckers supposed to move! It won't budge!

There's a pinch bolt, loosen that 1st.

But, before you take the wheel off, take the caliper off and tie it up.

And eyeball the spacers so you know which side is which... the disk side has a flange against the fork.

And depending on how far you go... might be a good time to change out the fork oil.

Think I'm effed. The pinch bolt is stripped, my hex keys won't grip it  >:(

1st, is it a metric allen?
2. new?
3. high quality?

no to all 3, yes your f'd.

screw extractor would be my 1st choice
drill will be the last.

Yup to all three. Off to home depot for an extractor. Nothing accept learning to ride has been easy on this old 86...it's gonna make it that much sweeter when it's done tho  ;)

Wait you said I'm effed if it's a no to all three questions, but it's a yes to them, it's metric, new-ish, and a craftsman, so there's hope???

Noope,... he meant, yes to all 3,...

You're still 'effed.... :-?...

If you have an impact wrench,.. you might be able to wedge a flat blade bit in there, and tap it out...

Try to tap in a TORX bit.

OOPS, yes that's what I meant.
actually, either way...
3 no's go get a good wrench
3 yes's go get the extractor.

yes to the torx bit, go to a harbor freight to save some cheese.  tap with hammer and you may be in luck.  Push in as you twist...then go get the extractor if you fail.

The torx bit was promising, and then it failed. Went to harbor freight and got an extractor set, and that failed. Now the opening to the bolt is nice and round  :)  I guess I need a bigger extractor. I'll try again tomorrow, I'll move on to the tank for tonight  :-[

This has turned out to be the bolt from hell. I still can't get it out. Don't know what to do anymore. Should I just drill through it?

Not very rational since tires don't have infinite tread life  8-)

You need a tire today? Maybe you could put some penetratin oil on it & spend some time messin with it, tapping on it, oilin it, maybe even ride it up to a machine shop & see if someone has an idea or would help out & not charge a lot. Maybe a welder could weld onto the head of the pinch bolt, WHICH you need to buy before you finish wrecking the one you have.. Sklow down, take a breath, think this thru & youll get more riding time in.

I don't know how skilled you are... but if it were me, I'd slot the head with a small dremel bit and whack at it with an impact driver.  apply penetrating oil from the back side.

I keep some beat up old blades from feeler gauges around. When an allen doesnt  fit just right, Ill cut a section off of one & see if I can slip it in next to the allen wrench in a place or 2. A dose of oil & some vibration, ( read" stick something down in the bolt & SMACK heck outta the thing a few times), & you mite come out okay.

I'm not very skilled, I'm learning as I go on this bike, and I don't have many tools. No impact wrench, just have ur basic drill, socket wrench, an an angle grinder. I'm not seeing a plausible way of getting this thing out and I don't wanna damage the thread and be forced to buy new forks! I guess I'll call some shops and see what they can do, cuz while I don't need a tire today I'll need one very soon and need to "fix" this mess. I don't get it, I used a good Allen wrench, sprayed Wd-40, tapped it with the hammer and twisted then it just started slipping and stripped the bolt. Was it my fault?

Some learning experiences are more expensive then others.

I'd prefer to try the method I told you last.

but last way is to drill off the head.
this will take the tension off and usually free the threads.
the hard part will be getting the threads out.
I don't recommend you try this way.
