Title: Tires to match stock S40 tires
Post by caseyLA on 10/08/10 at 17:57:21

I'm looking for a few options of tires that are a good match in appearance to the stock front tire. Any suggestions?

thanks!

pirelli, metzler, and dunlop are the 3 most common and most praised brands around here. IIRC Metzlers wear quickly and are kind of pricey but offer very good grip. Pirellis offer good grip and wear a long time but are quite pricey. Dunlops offer good grip but wear "rather quickly" but arent super expensive. Whatever you do dont go for any chung fooie chink tires. Not worth the money in the long run unless you're real hard up for cash. My Cheng Shin rear tire ($50) was bald by 5k mi and the front ($30) just started loosing air after a year and a half. No puntures that I could find. It just started losing 3 psi or so every day. Spent the extra $40 on dunlops and I know they'll have a much better return on my investment as that what I had the time before last.

BurnPgh said "... Metzlers wear quickly...".  Wrong.  I got 19,500 miles out of my rear ME880.

I'm pushing 10,000 on mine with plenty of tread left. All three brands are well liked by members here.

must've got it mixed up. I know one of the above 3 brands doesnt wear particularly long and one wears a very long time with the dunlop holding the middle ground between the two

Has anyone tried the Michelins? I have had good luck with the auto tires, excellent slush and wet grip with long wear.

Hi fellas, just new to the board, and have paid my $99 for a spot to get a Ryca complete kit.  Saw this thread concerning tires, and when looking at the photos of the bike on the site, I keep thinking this would look really hot with some white-walls. Maybe it's just me but this bike in Satin black with white-walls would look sweet.

Namaste.

Finally got my Pirelli 66 Route's on after them sitting for a couple months.  Got them from Dennis Kirk with tubes and rim strips for $177 total.  Not real crazy about the look but boy did they make a difference in the ride.  I have a 95 with 3800 miles on the original IRC's.  They were hard and checked.  Worlds of difference with the new tires.  Oh yah.  The rear tire is a 140/90H-15 and a little larger than stock.  It leaves about a 1/2" clearance between the tire and drive belt.

I put 44K miles and change on a D404 150/80-16... and it still had tread when I sold the Vulcan.

Want one that will last forever? 135-15 Nankang (cheap Chicom tire) made for Volkswagen Beetles (REAL ones, aircooled). Just flash back to square profile 1960s and 70s street bike tires. Will last forever on the rear of a Savage.

Front? I'm going with a Dunlop or Avon (Speedmaster) 90/90-19 (3.00/3.25-19) ribbed tire. I don't like the look of "modern" motorcycle tires. 140-90-15 Intruder 800 stock rear Dunlop Qualifier. Lisa's lasted from 1996-2009... still had tread but finally got too hard to be safe.
