Title: First start of the day
Post by IN-S40 on 10/07/10 at 10:44:39

Hey everyone, I have noticed since I got my bike that on the first start of the day she smokes a little till it gets warmed up. I'm not talking like a bug fogger or anything just a little smoke. Wondering if this is common? Only on the first start does it smoke the rest of the day nothing.

Thanks!

Not common... What color smoke?...

White-ish maybe a tiny blue tint. I did change my oil last weekend and before draining it I did run a bit of seafoam through the oil, couple ounces maybe. Then drain and put in fresh oil. maybe its the seafoam burning off?

It's possible... If the bike's running good otherwise, put up with it 'till the next oil change...
If the smoke continues, you likely need rings or valve guides...

... and keep an eye on oil consumption...

Mine occasionally does that in the morning, not every morning and only when below 60 degrees. Funny thing is, I have hardly any oil consumption and it never does it right at startup. It has to run for at least 20 seconds, then sets in with the smoke for about another 20 seconds and then quits smoking. Like I said it has to be cooler than 60 degrees and does it about every four to five days. It also doesn't repeat it during the day, until stone cold again in the morning. I have no idea what that could be. Go figure.

... after reading Ralfguy's post,... it could also be condensation building up in the muffler...
Next time, give it a whif.... if it smells like burnt oil, it's burnt oil...
No smell,... it's probably a water buildup...

It'll eventually rust out your muffler... but no mechanical problem...

In cars with higher mileage, the valve stem seals sometimes leak a little oil into the cyclinders over night causing a little smoke at start up. Haven't torn down my bike, so I don't know if this is possible for the Savage. Any body else heard of this? Really no problem.

well its an 05 with 4300 miles on it so i would hope its not valve stem seals or rings... It has been 45 degrees in the morning when i first start it so that could be something. I'll give it a wiff tomorrow and see if it smells like oil.

Burning a little oil on startup till she warms up?

Your bike is trying to be a Harley ;D

I had a little oil smoke on start up a while back. I had just changed oil and had tried a different oil. Can't remember which brand now so I won't get the oil thread going again. Went back to Castrol and Valvoline bike oil and it went away. I run 20-50 year round and have almost 18,000 miles on 'suzi. No morning fog and no oil burn between changes. The air cooled bikes are a lilltle looser on tolerances when cold. Once warmed up, everything tightens up. I think if you change oil and stay with a known good oil for the bike, your morning fog wil go away. I would't worry about it at all at this point.

Mine is a whitish-blue smoke and it does smell like burnt oil a little. She does that now since over two years/10.000 miles. She didn't do it all summer now, just ever since it got cooler a week ago again.  Could it be a drop or two from the breather tube getting sucked into the carb?

Well checked it out this morning and it is indeed oil. It not always the same amount though. Yesturday it was just a little smoke today it was alittle more. I'll keep an eye on the oil, if it continues i might swap the oil out and try somethign else.

Haven't heard of it, but doesn't mean it don't happen.
I agree with boofer.
You might take a look at the valves the next after sitting over night.
Take the header off and give it a peek. :o

What is probably happening is the cooler nights you are experiencing is shrinking the valve stem seals allowing a very miner gap between the seals and stems. But once it warms up the seals expand and seals it back up. This is nothing to worry about and nothing that can be "fixed" as it is merely high school science.

This is merely my opinion however but it does seem to fit the facts you stated.

Well the smoke was bothering me enough to swap it out and see if that made a difference, a bit of OCD on my part... Had to change the oil on my girlfriends bike anyway. Picked up some Castrol motorcycle oil 20w50 and the smoke is gone!  ;) Maybe my suzi is a bit to "loose" for regular lube.. ::)

I'm sure the Castrol I used for a year did a great job. It was synthetic, I think. Acteveo. I have used Castrol or Valvoline in everything I owned for the past 40 years. But I know some of you have mentioned taking a quart with you for the superslab day runs. I had the same problem until I went with Rotella. It hardly uses any between changes. I am glad that people on here want to pamper their bikes. I know people who never check the oil in their cars and never check the pressure in their tires. Whatever you use suits me fine. I have a book on the DC-3 airplane, know as the C-47 in WWII. According to the author a DC-3 was hit in one engine and lost all the oil. After a forced landing on a friendly island, the only oil they could find was in their cargo. It was cooking oil. They filled it up and flew to another base. I can't prove it. But motorcycle people do some strange stuff to get home after a breakdown. Right?
