Title: Axle Nuts Size?
Post by ATLjan on 10/06/10 at 19:56:33

I plan to remove my wheels and take them into a shop to have new tires mounted.

Can someone please tell me the size of the axle nuts so I can purchase the right wrench?

I'm happy to listen to any suggestions to make my first attempt as painless as possible.

Thanks for the help.

17mm  / 24mm  ...  Lean your chest weight on the seat to support the bike and crank, with one wrenching arm hanging over each side...
Make loud grunty noises... ;)...

Change the tires yourself it saves money and improves colloquial vocabulary.

Thank you so much for the information.

I actually thought about changing the tires myself.  I've changed plenty of bicycle tires and a wheel barrow tire just this spring, but a friend with much more motorcycle experience said that I should take them to a shop.

How do you balance yours after you change them?

I should maybe admit that the part of my vocabulary to which I think you refer is coming along nicely!

I have a metal rod that I suspend between two kitchen chairs so that the wheel assembly freely rotates on its bearings.

The rod does not have to be a precise fit, a smaller rod will still work as the bearing inner race can roll on the rod and the bearing can roll on its ball bearings, all free and easy motions.

Take the whole bike to the shop and let them do it.

Oh, I guess that's pain to the wallet, so you'll have to pick your pain....  ;)

Personally I didn't think taking either of the tires off was all that difficult, but I will leave the mounting/balancing to a shop that has the right equipment and know how. Do double check after they give you the tires back that they are mounted in the correct direction though.

Oh yeah,... and tell the shop you want a 90' valve stem on the rear, facing to the brake side...
you'll thank me later... ;)...

I was gonna change mine...thought better of it. I'm glad I took them to the shop. I did remove them myself...my technique was to put the bike in first gear, sat behind the bike, put one wrench on the righthand side and put my foot on it, took the 24mm wrench (big one from autozone) and grabbed it with both hands and jerked HARD a couple times...finally broke free, thought I'd kill myself.
MAKE SURE YOUR BIKE IS STTING SOLID BEFORE YOU SIT BEHIND IT!!!!
