Title: Grease not Oil this time
Post by Trippah on 10/06/10 at 11:39:04

Well, went to the car parts store, the atv store, and the tractor guys store..all grease is Lithium based. :o  No Molly grease anywhere.

Where or where has my Molly gone, and where can I find her.   Or can we use the modern lithium casting aside dear molly? :)

And as a Patriots fan, no Moss on this team anymore. :o :o :o

Well, most all grease has a lithium 12-hydroxy stearate base.  Moly, really molybdenum disulfide, is a solid additive like graphite for improved anti wear characteristics in certain applications, but it is still is dispersed in a lithium-base grease.  Perhaps there's your confusion.  Valvoline and others make greases with molybdenum disulfide.  I use it on chassis ball joints and brake caliper slider pins.

Rorkover- it (Molybdenum disulfide) wasn't listed as an ingrediant on any that I looked at.  But thanks for the info, I was thinking Molly was the dinosaur and lithium the new kid on the block. ;D

Phelonius - it's soo hard to keep  those lube job threads from squirting up.

Sta-lube is what I was told was good for the caliper pins its synthetic grease the main thing in it is polyalphaolefin.

I found a lithium grease with moly (molybdenum disulphide) as an additive in Walmart, in one of their Super-Tech greases. Also, Honda dealers sell a moly grease with 60% moly in it, designed for lubing drive splines on shaft-drive bikes. Both came in cartridges designed for grease guns. I used the Honda product to lube the bushings on the rear suspension on my Ninja, and it seems to work OK.

Thanks all for your input, tried another autoparts store and they had a tube..the proper brown color. None of this pale white stuff..no way.  It was also twice the price of the lithium only $6.00 and change vs $3.00 and change. :o

Lithium soap based moly greases are easy to find.

If you require a truly waterproof moly grease, check this out:

Schaeffer #221 Moly Ultra (http://www.schaefferoil.com/221_grease.html)

I think this is really good stuff.  Aluminum complex base.

This is available locally in many places:
