Title: Clicking from starter?
Post by Bubba on 09/30/10 at 07:14:07

Hi all, I bought the 500 buck 97' savage I posted a couple weeks ago. It's gonna need some work.
I plan to try and pop start it tomorrow just to see if it indeed runs as advertised when I bought it.
Right now when I try to fire her up it just gives me a clicking sound. I'm thinking either starter or solenoid but don't have a clue as to how to proceed.
Input is more than welcome.
thx

...Or a low battery. Jump it first, then try. We start from there.

Yep, a chattering sillynoid usually means its receiving very low voltage.

Start at the battery (check connections),....either charge or jump.

The starter relay will just click rapidly when the battery is low.
Clicks when activated, power goes to the starter, starter drops voltage low enough to deactivate the relay, battery recovers and the whole process starts again.

Thanks guys, I'll give that a shot first. If I leave a charger on it do you think that will take care of the juice problem?

Had pretty much the same problem with the bike I bought last week, though I think I left the switch in the parking light possision. Tried to start it and nothing but clicks. Put the charger on it for 30 minutes at 2 amps and it kicked right over. Last night I pulled the battery out to check the water and found the water level was 1/4 from the bottom of the battery, yea was way low! Topped up the batt im just hopeing running it so low on water hasnt hurt the battery any.

Weak battree, try a jump start with cables first. It still may not start but if it turns over vigorously at least you will know for certain that the battree is weak.

Yup. Try jumped. That way you KNOW it's getting juice from a good battery.

Thanks all, I left the float charger on it overnight, I managed to get one good crank but it wasn't enough to turn it over. I'm leaving it on all day today and I'll try when I get home. The bike has been sitting for like a year according to the PO. If it won't turn over I'll switch out the battery from the '06 bike and see if that works.
I'd jump it but I only have big fat car jumpers and they won't fit in there.  ;D

You could run some wires to the battery & hook the cables to those.
A floatr charger as a battery charger is not very good. Theyre meant to maintain a charge, not charge a dead battery.

Great idea JOG, I'll give that a shot tonight. I might know someone with a for real charger I can borrow if the jump goes well.
thx

While you're messing around down there, you might want to clean the cable ends and the posts and make sure they're making good contact. I've had mine have trouble when it was out in the rain for a couple days, and get a little crud build up between the contacts and the post.

I finally got a chance to work on the bike again (man, life gets in the way sometimes!)

Anyway, tried jump - nothing
fully charged the battery (14.2V) - just one click when I try to turn it over.

It almost seems as if maybe one of the safety switches is stopping anything from happening.
I'm pitiful at electrics so any help would be welcome. I know I'm supposed to start at the battery and work out from there.
thx

If it were a safety, it wouldn't click.
Check the grounds and check the battery.
Take it to autozone or the like, they'll test for free.

battery might be so dead that it won't do more that click even with a jump.  Eliminate it altogether.

Did you ever try pop starting it?

I tried half heartedly, The hill in front of my house is pretty good and it sounded as though it might turn over if I had more hill left. I ended up having my 11 year old and her friend push me back up the hill and once was enough for them... ;D

Id pull the plug & see if itll spin over that way.

I got tired of that nonsense with mine and added a different button to start it, basically bypassing the piece of crap factory relay. But still have a draw that will flat out frag the battery within a couple weeks of not running. Hook a known good battery to the cables. Find the solenoid. Short across the large posts with a BIG insulated screwdriver. If it starts, the ignition relay is shot. Bike Bandit has them, same price as stealership and will show up at your door faster than the stealer can order one in.

Thanks, put the battery in from my '06...nothing. just a click under the seat. So where's the solenoid and the ignition relay?
As a side note, I tried pop starting it again...nothing. I know there is a problem with the head cover bolts. I'm wondering if I'm also low on compression. The biggest problem for me is time to work on it so any shortcuts that can narrow things down helps.
Thanks again

starter relay is under the seat on the front of the fender.
there isn't an ignition relay.

Well, take out the spark plug and try hooking up the starter pole directly to +BAT for a second or two, to check for fried starter. If starter spins OK, than it must be your decomp control circuit or starter solenoid.

12 volts on the yellow/green stripe wire on the decomp controller will make it turn over. But, if its clicking, then yea, pull the plug, unload the starter from needing to crank thru compression, & see what happens.
