I've been told that somewhere around 2001 or 2002 or 2003 maybe, the engine cases changed from a clunky older style to something that looks a little nicer.

Is this true? If so, in what year did this take place?

false -- cases always the same externally.

Picked up an extra shift gear (from 4-5) but that was internal only, no change to external appearances.

Did the finish on the cases change any? Maybe what the guy meant that told me about this was that the surface of the cases was more polished or something.

Some have a black painted block, and head,.... that's about it...

My 2000 Savage came with the plain metal finish on the cooling fins. The spare/replacement engine I bought came off of a 2002 and it had the black-painted (but chromed edge) fins. Looks nicer, no difference otherwise.

My '06 has a black motor, but the fin edges are bare brushed aluminum.
