Title: crossover parts
Post by wingsout on 09/29/10 at 16:27:04

It all started with the muffler on my wife's s40. Then she didn't want it anymore; now it's mine. Then the front wheel; now I've discovered I really like working on it. I bought a set of forward controls. I know I would like to customize it; being an artist at heart; I've got some wild ideas; my question is: does anyone here know what parts from other bikes can be crossed over to the s40?

P.S.---I'm a welder.

Harley bars, Harley muffler, Intruder 800 shocks, god knows rear fender, Schwinn footpedals, BMX footpeg risers...

... and, you're a welder,... so all parts are crossover parts...  ;)...

'83-86 GS550 front and rear wheels at least. GS450 (IIRC) front end. You can ditch the belt and pulleys for chain and sprockets. Header from an SR500 is close but doesnt quite fit, but as a welder....

:D I want to swap tanks and I never liked the tank mounted speedo so I'm looking for a speedo off a 250 or a dirt bike that runs off the front wheel hub.

Already went that route. Gunna need some extending and bending to make it work.

It arrived yesterday... a wee bit shorter than our header
I've been down for 3 days with a migraine that just did not want to go away, but feel better this morning so maybe I can get some stuff done today; take it out and play with it.
It is pretty though.

How different is the ride with Intruder shocks compared to the stock ones?
Are they direct bolt on?

Intruder shocks are very soft... and long. Mine feels a bit front end heavy since Lisa and i traded shocks (her 800 Intruder now looks like how it should have shipped stock, no dirtbike fender gap).

What can you put on a Savage? Whatever you want... 12 inch muffler and 29 inch fishtail tailpipe. Shovelhead rear fender, via sidemount headlight bracket bolted to frame, with reflector mount bolted to tailpipe, sporting a Knucklehead beehive taillight and generic bullet light signals, VTX 1800 aftermarket plate mount. 15 inch rise Krome Werks apehangers with 1970s chopper grips and clamp on cat eye mirrors. Lucas/Bates replica 7 inch headlight and mounting clamps. Bates replica fork gaiters. Scrap pile sourced old gas tank. Stock seat pan with 3/4 inch of blue ensolite foam and waterbuffalo leather.

Savages are cheap. Stock is boring.... ::)

I've been measuring the front end of my Savage against my VS800 Intruder.  Looks like it should fit.  The steering bearings, dust cover and top nut are the same Suzuki part numbers on both bikes.  The top and bottom triple tree clamps appear to be the same distance apart.  But the 800 fork is 3/4" longer.  That would give me heavier duty forks, bigger brake, speedometer mounted on triple tree in front of handle bars with a front wheel sending unit, and same size wheel and tire with a slightly sleeker fender.

Any thoughts?

Jef:

Back in the day when I used to watch my friends build choppers in their living room---we used to just try stuff  to see what worked. It's an educated guess but your idea sounds like it would work; 3/4" is not enough change to affect the steering geomentry---but the lean angle may change. I'm looking for cast wheels, front and back; I would also like disc brakes on the rear---that's a lot of cuttin' and fittin'---but winters are long here. Now all I have to do is find a 2 bedroom apt with tool storage--you can guess what the 2nd B room is for.

Intruder uses 89/90-21 front, Savage a 100/90-19. Intruder axle has a tendency to rip out the threads in the lower leg it screws into. Both front brake set-ups are jokes, but the Intruder less of one. Changing handlebar on a stock Intruder sucks, you will need to modify the riser set, the factory bars are slotted, the risers tabbed to lock the bars into one position.

Other than that, go for it.

The GS450 has a 19" front and the disk is the same thickness, just cut down the diameter a bit to fit the savage caliper.  Add spacers to suit.
The rear is a direct swap.
I haven't found any with the same cush drive and disk mounts.  Most with disk are shaft drive.
