Post by nikkot on 09/28/10 at 08:08:05

hi guys,
i'm from Greece and i am owner of a Suzuki savage ls 400.
First of all   i'm really sorry for my english. Please inform me if anyone knows how i can improve the horsepower of my bike. it's a 1993 model.
Travelling speed max  90 kmh. i want to travel with 110-120 kmh. how i'll do it? can i put a cylinder from ls650 to my bike? please answer me if you know. Thanks a lot

While we all think a LS400 is the same as a LS650 with a different top end, none of us can be sure as we don't have one to compare.

Maybe someone in NZ has one.

I'm not 100% but I think the 400 is a short stroke version of the 650.

I've done a search and it seams I was wrong, the 400 is 88 bore and 65 stroke.

Seems like a 400 should be able to do 120kph stock...  Most 250's will do that...

Is the bike in good running order?...

Someone in NZ does have one, well, i bought a 400 motor for spares for my 650. I can tell you it has the same cam, valves etc, head and bottom end and only difference is the bore size, BUT it does not have the decomp mechanisim on the head so fitting a 650 top end will be somewhat complicated re electrics and so on. Would be better off to hot up that motor with carb, exhaust, port mods and maybe even a new cam from Lancer, should be able to use all the same methods as for 650.
Without decomp mech will destroy starter and starter gears in short time methinks if you were to fit 650 top end without the additional wiring and solenoid for decompression.

for more top speed
chain conversion

chain conversion my nuts. You ought to be getting better than 90km/h. Thats about what...50-55mph? Whats your mileage (kilometerage(?))? Fuel consumption? Im going to take a blind stab and guess you've got something wonky with the carb and you're either getting too much or not enough fuel and thats holding back your top speed. Hows acceleration? Any serious lagging or surging when you twist the throttle? Clutch cable adjusted properly? A perpetually slipping clutch is no good for the clutch but would also limit top speed.

Also some European countries have a restrictor plate between the carb and head that is required until your license rating is raised. Germany was that way according the folks on the first Savage board in Germany. Think it restricted the HP to 25, Italy may be the same o may be a German bike that never had the restrictor removed. Look at a german parts fiche or shop manual to see what you are looking for. Max

Agree with most here. 400 must do more than 90km/h stock. My 50cc moped was pushing 70km/h!

It may be power restricted for 16 year-olds (some countries had that too, a plate in the carburator which rectricts down to 12HP I think) or something is wrong.

WHAT MUFFLER DO YOU HAVE ?
IF IT IS STOCK THEN YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT WITH A BETTER FLOWING MUFFLER

ALSO, YOU COULD REMOVE THE CARB TO SEE IF YOU DO HAVE A RESTRICTOR PLATE AND IF SO THEN REMOVE IT.
AS LONG AS THE CARB IS OFF, CHECK TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS CLEAN INSIDE.

IS THE CARB ON THE LS400 THE SAME AS THE 650 ?
IF DIFFERENT CARB THEN TUNING REQUIREMENTS ARE DIFFERENT

Wohooooo! Get rid of them and you got another 10 HP to play with.

For reference,   member RedWine from South American (Chile?  Peru?)  has a LS400 that died.  I remember when he was here in PA , Sept of 2008, He had said that the LS650 cylinder will not fit into the LS400 lower end.

Haven't seen him on since the earthquake down there.  Hope he didn't lose the bike in the rumble.

My 400 does over 140 kph no hassle... Also relatively less vibration than the 650. Previous owner did install a super trap exhaust and does not back fire at all so would assume it was correctly rejetted. It does perform very well.

I have both bikes in my garage.
1992 NK41B Japanese domestic market bike and the 650 which was sold here in south africa (2004) model or k4.
In a country where virtually only the die hards who enjoy big singles and the bulk prefer twins or more cc they don't know how much fun a single can be long term.

Am I right in thinking that the 400 is chain-drive, rather than belt-drive?
If so, experimenting with the gearing becomes a lot easier.

Yep, the 400 is chain drive.

Yes, experiment with the size of chain sprockets easier, but the 400 has a little less torque, but due to the smaller stroke of the piston has the best acceleration
