Exciting isn't it? Man I know I was nervous as could be when I put my permit in my wallet. But it all melts away when you fire her up and take her for a spin. Just keep a cool head and stay frosty.  8-)

Nice to hear you have found your helmet and gloves. O and don't forget to check the oil as well as give your bike a safety inspection before riding.,,:) kim

You will get used to it, like walkin... very natural.

I had the same concern.  It seems so unatural.  Had nagging questions like, how fast should I be going before counter steering start to work.  Will I be able to swerve on emergency (double counter steering hard).  These will become very easy, especially if you ride often and you ride to perfect those learned skills.
Also like anything physical, your muscle will learn those motor skills, which is important when in emergency situation.

Soon you will feel like the bike is you and you are the bike... flowing through the road.

Be on the lookout for cagers and kids/dogs.  So far, I've managed to swerve or emergency break about 6 times from going down.  People just don't seem to comprehend that bike is next to them or its coming down the road.  I say comprehend, because I am almost certain they saw me.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of riding.

If you have been riding a bicycle, you have been countersteering. Despite at least one naysayer, countersteering is the only way by which a single-track vehicle (bike) can be steered, and it works at all speeds. EDIT: All speeds above zero, that is.

Countersteering demo - best done on a pedal bike. Find a suitable location such as a parking lot or residential (low-traffic) street. Get moving at modest speed. A helmet is not a bad idea. On a bicycle, a comfortable speed will be perhaps ten mph. Pretty much every kid learns to ride no-hands, so you probably already know how. Moving along, no-hands, take any convenient finger and press forward gently on either handlebar. For the sake of discussion, your right pinkie finger. Press forward on the right handlebar, which will turn the handlebars to the left. The bike will immediately turn right. Relax the pressure and the bike will straighten up. Repeat as needed until you have convinced yourself. The reason for using one finger instead of finger and thumb is so you will be sure you did not inadvertently pull instead of push. The harder you push, the more quickly the bike will turn.

There are 5 ways to steer a bike or motorcycle ,counter steer is one.

my suggestions for what its worth:

Don't worry about counter steering for now. push on the opposite handlebar.  i.e. push on right handlebar to curve left

Take a motorcycle safety course

Read a few good books on motorcycling:  Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough and Lee parks' book (i think it's called Total Control ) - not at home to check the bookshelf

have fun and be safe

B1-66er, what a jovial person you must be, as you end every post with "haha".
Just an observation.....

...also be aware that 70% of your braking power is at the front wheel...
... and it's very likely that you can't stop as fast as a modern car...

I'm on it. I wouldn't say I'm jovial, I just don't take many things that seriously.

Well I got the bike today and already put about ten miles on it. Its alot easier than I expected.

I do have one question though. It has an exhaust leak where the muffler meets the header pipe and the bike backfires when I shut it off. Would the leak cause that?

WHAAAAAAAATT!!??!!????????

:-? >:( :o :-? :o >:(

Did I really say that?  It seemed reasonable when I was in front of the computer typing!

B1,  if you took my advice you are probably now dead!

My apologies and condolences!

I meant to say push right, go right ; push left, go left!

i think I got busted to "Newbie" for that advice  :(

I didn't, Haha

Oddly enough, "push right, go right" describes countersteering perfectly. And that is exactly what the demo on the pedal bike will show.

Congrats!  Like everyone is saying, take it easy, and keep your eyes open, because it seems like most of the cagers don't! ;D

And don't get too embarrassed the first time you kill it at a stop light, it's easy to do (I know from experience! :-[).
