Title: Engine swap time
Post by Chief Gunner on 09/22/10 at 04:22:43

Finally home from my tour in the sandbox, and time to get the bike up and running. Wanted to thank everyone for their advice and entertainment over the last few months. Gave me something to pass the time and get my mind off of things.
Got the replacement engine, cdi box, wiring harness, and a (new to me) windshield to install. Looking forward to every bolt, beer, and busted knuckle.
Will be balancing time between the bike and family, but the wife wants to ride again as bad as I do so there shouldn't be any problems there!!  ;)
Will post pics of the progress as it goes. Man, it's good to be home!!!

Well here she is, the patient. 1987 model, restored her about a year and a half ago and gambled on the damaged cam bearing surfaces. Got about 1000 miles out of it and pulled the top cover to check before I deployed and it didn't look good.

And here is the new ticker after a bath. The case here on the right has a hole from shipment but I'm replacing them with the old ones that I polished up.

Yeah, the guys at the shop were doing a bunch of SCBA tanks, they threw the fenders and tank in, got lucky.

Looks like the cam bearing surfaces are good to go, and the rocker arms looks good too.

Camshaft looks awesome. And what do we have here?!?! Another plug with no sealant on it!! 96 model engine in case anyone is keeping track. There were signs of slight leakage, glad I took the time to look.

Time to button this up and check out the chain tentioner, then paint time!!

Chain tentioner measured at 20mm, about the same as the other engine so I'll button it up and make sure it runs before I put any more money into it. Ran into some problems with the side covers that I posted in a different post. Got to clean up for the night as the rain has set in and my daughter has to get ready for school tomorrow and says I can't work on it without her. She is 15 and the joy of my life so I will not argue. She has been helping me with it all day and I've been grinning like a cheshire cat!! I'll post pics of the finished engine tomorrow if it is not still raining.
