Title: Squeaking noice from the belt
Post by Yan on 09/21/10 at 15:42:26

Squeaking  noise is coming from the drive belt after riding the bike in the rain. Seems to go away after a thorough wash. Today the noise is back, I lifted the bike on a jack but can't seem to find the source. The marks on the swingarm are the same on both sides, so the wheel seems to be aligned. Besides, it only seems to be happening after a rain, so I doubt it has to do with the wheel being misaligned. Any thoughts? Ideas? Thanks everyone!

It is telling you that it wants to be chain driven.

My belt does the same thing every now and then. If like mine, it shows no sign of misaligmnent, don't worry about it,.....its kinda part of the beast  ;)

a dab of grease on a couple (2) belt ribs will do ya

The belt might be slightly too tight.

If you back-off the adjuster bolts 1/2 turn or so you may get rid of the squeak. Worked on mine.

(basically - disconnect brake cable at rear wheel, loosen rear axle, jack up rear wheel, adjust bolts, and tighten everything up again. Apologies if you knew this already!)

Id`avoid grease on the belt.

Theres other stuff, tho. Wax, I use a few swipes of canning wax.

I bought a bar of 100% bees wax at a local candle shop and rubbed it on the edges and the teeth of the belt.....I like to repackage it and put a label on it...: Squeak-bee-gone!

All my squeaking is gone.

Seems like I been workin on cars etc for a hunerd years, and I ain't found anything yet that will permanently stop belt noise, including some hi $ stuff. This belt and sheaves ain't no different, some are noisy, some aren't. Mite as well get used to it,.......I did.
And it still beats a chain drive,...hands down !!!!

Mine squeeked, especially when it was wet outside. I kept a bar of Bees Wax on the bike. A quick application on both sides of the belt kept the squeek quiet.

Mine has been sqeaking for the last couple of weeks. Last night I gave it a wash (fantastic) and a little bit of wax on the drive pulley. Today silence. Hope it continues.

The hash marks used to align the rear wheel may or may not be aligned with each other. I would use a straight edge or "eyeball" the belt before giving up.

I'm with Boofer, although with a slight twist so to speak.
The last time I adjusted my belt, I jacked up the rear of the bike and matched up the hash marks.  The belt did not track true and was rubbing on one side when I turned the wheel.  Even when the wheel is exactly in line the pulley may have some skew due to torque on it and distortion of the the rubber drive cushioners.  I continued to use the adjusters until the belt was tracking in the middle of pulley.

Spend 5 bucks on a 2 oz. tube of Harley-Davidson Poly-Oil... dab a pea-sized amount on your pinky finger and rub it on the edge of the belt where it appears to be making contact/noise.  You can apply it to only a couple inches of belt, the goo will spread out as you ride, and will last a while and silence the squeak.  I've had my belt checked for tension/alignment several times by a local Suzuki tech, darn thing still squeaks once in a while.  (I've heard that techs do tend to keep belts on the tight side, perhaps it may be a source of the problem)

All you need is too align it and the squeak will go away.
If it don't go away then either your frame or the swingarm is tweaked.

On a good level concrete surface, like a garage floor. Put the bike on your swingarm stand (got one right?) and use a T or level and shim or whatever it takes to get the rear wheel at 90 deg. then turn the front to get the same. If the front won't line up you'll have to loosen your triple tree pinch bolts (bottom tree), take the bike off the stand, bounce the front end and tighten the pinch bolts. Back on the stand, level the rear then the front. Good? O.K., now get a long string or line and run it from the rear wheel, from about 4" off the ground to the front. What I mean here is completely around the rear on both sides of the rear running up to both sides of the front. What your looking for is the string level along each side where it touches on the rear to the front. Now with all the things correct (90deg.,rear line etc), the string at the rear surface along the front tire should be the same distance (about 1/2 inch)  on each side. If not your rear wheel marks (on the adjuster) are off and will need to be corrected. This assures the wheels are aligned which is most important then you can shim the front sprocket if needed. I doubt it though.
Reading this , I see what I mean but....if you have questions just PM me. We can do it by phone.

That's a complete alignment procedure Lupo.

My technique is simplified and just addresses the belt.
raise the rear wheel off the ground and in neutral.
rotate the wheel and observe the belt.
If the belt tracks to the right, tighten the right and vise versa.
then spin the wheel the other way and readjust.
Try to get the belt in the middle, but as long as it's off the sides it should stop squeaking.

...hey, I still had a bit of libation in my glass :-? Yea, probably overkill but, it can't hurt.

That would be nice,....but there are several cogs that are continuously making slipping contact w/ the pulley,...front and rear, and I am convinced that is where much/most squeaking takes place,.....no different than a noisy serpentine belt on an auto engine.

I don't run a very tight belt,......not after having a couple rocks go thru it,...I just won't do it !
