Title: What has been your maximum indicated speed?
Post by BuckHMCC on 09/07/10 at 18:40:46

What has been your maximum indicated speed? Note that '>=" means greater than or equal to, and "<" means "less than". Please indicate whether your bike is stock or has carb/exhaust mods. Carb mods include jets and needles and white spacers and air filter/air box, but not idle circuit screw adjustment.

Seen about 90 but I had chain conversion for about 10-12% greater than indicated speed. So I've hit the ton or come really really close with a stock engine that had bad valves. Now
I got the lancer stage 1 cam, Vm38 carb with UFO, the exhaust port opened up a wee bit, and a SE slash cut muffler with stock header. Hitting 60 in about 5 seconds. Dont usually go much over 80. Bike's just too light and twitchy for me to feel comfortable. I've done it a few times just for kicks but its not really necessary. Kind of just asking for a ticket.

You really going to count rejetting a mod'd carb?
Even if you got the same gas mileage or less 1% less?
Gees your picky.

Stock I've always been able to do 100, with a cone filter and dyna pipe I max out at 105-106.

I didn't vote, because I have not run mine wide open for long enough to be satisfied it had topped out. It has been to 80, and had a little left, but not much.

I gotta get in on this one. 85 with mods. I think! It's pretty hard to read the speedo where it is and w/ my old eyes. I've got a Magellan GPS and will attach it to the headlight so I can see it while "lying under the paint". The gearing and wallowing seem to be the limiting factor. The engine has more poop but I don't want to go to a chain. The bike is delivering better than expected but.....

Just to add ( it's been about a week ) now since I paid more attention to the speedo. On a pretty flat strip of road 82-83. Haven't tried the GPS yet.

I ride in very dry air at about 1800feet. When the temps are in the 80s-90s I can hit 90-95. At temps above 105 it seems to top out at about 85.

I have not run mine wide open but I'm guessing it will easily do 85 because I've had it to 80 and it was fine, maybe find out soon  :) It hasn't had any modifications yet.

Downhill it was doing a bit over 90 a couple of days ago but that would take a good backwind and distance on level road. The corner speed makes up for the lack of thrust 8-)

Buck,

Interesting poll!

I've never had mine (see signature) wound out, but I'd like to see the results of the poll.

Do you suppose you could add an option something like:

"I don't know what my top speed is?"

so weak dicks like me could see the polling results?

TIA!

Post by BuckHMCC on 10/19/10 at 05:54:35

Here are the interim poll results for those of you who cannot see the results.

After about 6 weeks there are 41 respondents.

85 mph or more
24%  stock
10%  modified exhaust
34%  modified exhaust and carb

75 mph or more
12%  stock

less than 75 mph
17%  stock
2%    modified

So, a large majority (68%) are thrill-seekers, pushing the bike for all it can do. A minority (19%) are more reserved, keeping it under 75 mph indicated (which is likely 70 mph actual).

The numbers suggest that modifications do not make a big difference in top speed, but another poll might confirm this.  Numbers also suggest that those who modify are more likely to go for it.

Interesting ?
Hardly,.........top speed can have so many variables and conditions, I see no point in this poll.

Routy, as creator of this poll I respectivefully disagree. The poll has run its course. It's confirmed what I suspected -- even those who ride a so-called 'geezer bike' (see the age distribution poll) are risk-takers. Three-quarters (76%) of the 52 respondents have explored the top-speed capacity. Also those who modify the intake and/or exhaust are not reporting significantly higher top speeds. Mods look to be good for another 10 mph.

Mods arent all about top end,, but low end grunt

+1 on only picking up 10-15 mph in ready top end speed using lots & lots of mods.

What complicates things if you get a slight downhill and lots of room you CAN wring out all that "slow increase in speed" that the stock bike is capable of doing, which can take you over 90 on a stock bike.

Run a stock bike full out against a modded bike and the modded bike simply gets there faster.   And believe it or not, that extra little bit of top end translates into "he's gone and we never saw him again".

And I have seen a string of stockish Savage bikes pulling 70 plus mph on mountain roads (with a Yamaha 250 hanging right in there with them).

Then I left them ....

Threw mine around a bit yesterday. It's running really good, weather was perfect and the roads were fairly level. I weigh 225 and am 5'11". The thing gets up to the 70-80 range pretty quick but the anchor seems to fall at 80. If I lay down I can almost touch the 85 mark.

adding straws to the air intake like diamond jim helps low end at the expense of top end

You can put a sleeve in the intake manifold it will help low end and hurt the top end.

Lupo, I notice you don't have a windshield. Now I don't have a wind tunnel, but I believe the 650 runs faster with a windshield to clean up the stream around the rider. When I got mine in stock form with 7400 miles on it, I took it up to 95-97 indicated with no problem. I wasn't used to the engine and didn't like the sound of high rpms, so I backed off. Now it's just something to tease me. I know it will do 100, but I'll never take her that far. Got up to 90 about a month ago. Some of you guys with lots of time and curiosity might want to try with and without windshield. I'm happy to stay around 80-90 for short bursts just to  get that "second look" from cagers who don't take me seriously. I have adjusted the carb and put on HD muff, so I have good acceleration from 50-75 where I need it without down shifting. My experience FWIW. ;) And I weigh 195 this week.

Stock 2009 w/a windscreen.  Weigh 210 pounds, have had it brushing just short of the 100 line (98?) on the speedometer briefly a couple times, but the vibrations at that speed (both my lips - 3/4 helmet - and the bike) make it hard to tell...other times it seems to wind out around 85...not sure what the variables are that make the top end so much different but its never the same stretch of road or weather conditions (other than dry and not too windy)....

The fastest my Savage has gone while I owned it was 75mph in the back of a truck. Then about 1mph as I rolled it into the garage.

I had hit aprox 90mph on the highway going down a little hill. The only mod was 9 fifty cent coin size holes on the stock muffler. This was bringing the bike from Augusta, GA - Atlanta, GA (2.5 hour ride on 43 degree wheater) NOT FUN

Never held mine open long enough to find out. It pulls strongly to 85 and I have briefly taken it 90 a couple times. 07 S40 needle spacer and straight through glasspack muffler. I live at 1500 ft elevation.

Between 90 and 95 down hill with a tail wind, machine is stock. My GF weighs alot less than I do and she can get it almost to 100. We only tried this on one occasion, the bike likes it around 70. Regards, Jim.

The official redline is 6,500rpm. When my tachometer shows 6,500 rpm, my speedometer shows 95mph. It can get there when the conditions are right. Regularly 91-92 is the top end, that is just about 150rpm below the redline. It can do it either solo, or two-up. About 85 uphill is the limit solo, about 82 two-up. The other night It managed to redline with two-up. I guess the air was that good. If the tachometer is correct, my bike can't do the ton, unless it is overrevved downhill.

70 MPH and stock. I just got it running after it sat 2 years, its kind of shaky. She's smoothing out after several tanks of gas. I've done the ton on a couple of GoldWings and a 2009 Royal Star Venture. I couldn't tell I was going over 100 except for my wife jabbing me in the ribs

I got my stock '87 up to 80 once. With a 4 speed trans. It was winding out pretty good and a stop sign was coming so I let off. Was vibrating a lot too. I try to stay off the superslab, so 65 is about my limit these days.
