Title: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/01/10 at 09:53:25 So, after putting my stock petcock back on, I found out it is slowly leaking (from the tank to petcock connection). I've order the Raptor replacement which of course is a manual petcock. My question is this, once I replace my vacuum petcock with a manual one, should I plug both vacuum lines on the carb off? Thnx guys. |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by spacepirates on 09/01/10 at 10:29:43 There is only one vac line on the right side of the carb. It has a metal casing that follows the hose up to the stock petcock. you might be confusing it with the two vent lines (symmetrical on either side of the carb), which need to stay open. I filled the vac with RTV and shoved a small screw in there which seemed to do the trick. If the stock petcock is leaking from the tank/petcock connection, you might have the same problem with the raptor. next time you take the petcock off, make sure there is a clean, flat mating surface on the bottom of the tank for the petcock and that the petcock goes on tight. |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/01/10 at 11:22:09 Got you, I'm draining the tank tonight and will look at the gasket there. Maybe I over tightened it, but the petcock itself looks old and rusty. I figured a manual one should be better. It wasnt leaking before, only started when I put it back after some mods that required the tank off. Anyway, I'll find a way to plug that vacuum line, maybe a rubber plug from the auto store. Thanks again. |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by verslagen1 on 09/01/10 at 11:27:35 the tank to petcock seal is a shaped o-ring. mine was cracked so I replaced it with a regular round one. the bolts also need a sealing washer, same as the ones used on the engine. |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/01/10 at 11:34:39 So rubber o-ring and flat metal washers. I'll take it off tonight and inspect. I believe the auto part store or local hardware store should have that. Dont feel like waiting a week for the new petcock :) |

sealing washers, these are rubber coated. |

Mine are just regular washers ... The stock shaped o-ring keeps fuel from leaking around the bolts. I'm pretty sure it is the same with the raptor I changed to a raptor a couple weeks ago and haven't had any leaks using regular steel washers. |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/01/10 at 13:55:01 Just got home from work, tank is draining now. About to take the petcock off and see if I can fix temporarily so I can ride while I wait for the raptor's. |

Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Serowbot on 09/01/10 at 14:14:27 Arnold,... you'll need to block the carb vac line with more than just a rubber nipple plug... The vacuum will suck a hole in that in just a month or two... I've got a snug screw in mine, and covered it with a nipple plug for good measure... ;)... |

Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/01/10 at 18:19:36 Ok, I put some RTV on O-ring and the 2 washers, it's still drying so I dont want to put some gas in the tank just yet. I'll let it fully cure and tomorrow I'll put some gas when I get home from work. Hoping for the best. I also replaced the fuel hose with a heavy duty one, I found a plug for the vacuum line of carb that will work but I guess I'll have to put a screw in it now :) Didnt know it'd suck this much. What kind of screw goes in? What kind of thread? I guess since it's brass it will thread whatever you put in. |

any kind rolling around on the floor that won't stick out the tail pipe. goop up the threads with rtv and stick it. |

Another way to skin that cat: http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee201/Digger109/CarbVacuumPortPlugE.jpg I squeezed a bit of silicone sealant into the hose first. IHTH! |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/02/10 at 05:16:21 I'll just shove a screw in there and cap with a rubber nipple. darn how long is the curing time on that RTV stuff? Still tacky after drying overnight. Well screw it, I'll put gas back in the tank tonight regardless. |

I totally agree not to buy a used petcock especially one whos prior life was on a 4 wheeler caked in mud. YMMV |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/02/10 at 16:15:35 Ok, new thing. Here's my setup now, I have a screamin eagle straight through muffler, cone air filter, stage 3 pilot and jet needle but in order to totally get rid of backfiring my richness screw is only open one turn. I mean the screw is almost all the way screwed in but one turn. Is that normal? |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/02/10 at 17:30:00 By the way, RTV has fixed my leaky petcock :) but I'm still replacing it when the raptor arrives, done with vacuum... |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by BurnPgh on 09/03/10 at 20:18:52 as long as you're less than 3 turns out (counterclockwise) from gently seated you're golden. If you're at 3 turns or more you need a richer pilot jet. Seems liek you got it pretty spot on. |
Title: Re: Petcock Replacement Post by Arnold on 09/04/10 at 07:26:55 Great, I think I had it backward, I though mistakingly that clockwise was richer and counter was leaner. I'll refine the tweaking, will be carrying that flathead screwdriver with me for a little while :) |
