Title: Electrical problem
Post by Zylar on 08/28/10 at 07:02:21

Hey all,

I hadn't ridden in a couple months since I needed tires, had stabil in the tank and a float charger on the battery.  Went to start the bike up and run it a bit, and it had no electrical power when the ignition is in the ON position.  When the key is turned to ACC the taillight comes on.

I checked the ignition switch for continuity and it tested ok when ON.  So I assume I have a short in the ON circuit somewhere.

Any tips on where and how would I continue troubleshooting this?

Thanks,

Did you check to make sure all the safety switches were not activated?

Kickstand up?

Clutch pulled in?

On/Off switch on handlebar turned on?

(Start with the easy items first)

Yep, checked all that.

When key is ON, neither headlight nor neutral light comes on.

I'm pretty sure the battery is near-dead too.  It shows 12.5 volts when not under load, but even turning the key to ACC brings it down to 10.5v.  Turning the key ON brings it down to ~300mV.  I would expect it to at least power the headlight weakly, and turn on the neutral light though.

But maybe this is just a weird symptom of a low battery?  Could I be so lucky?

Well, I may have figured it out.

We've had a lot of rain the past week, and even though I keep the bike under a tarp the wind had blown it off the front end for a night.

The connector for the left-hand controls, situated under the tank and in a rubber 'sleeve', had filled up with water.  The electrical tape just above it was hanging loose, I guess water just ran right down the rubber sleeve and filled up the connector.  Maybe water tension or something kept it from draining, because a good 2 tablespoons came pouring out when I unplugged it.

Gonna let it dry out for a while, and see how it goes.

Well, it seems nice and dry now, but still no power.  I've been over every connector on the bike and no others had any obvious problems.

I'm going to try and get a new battery today.  Any more advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,
