I pulled 12v power from the battery,...just plugged into the battery charge plug at the battery.

Then got a HB mount for my Gar Etrex and tried it out.
Disappointed,....I'm now thinking a cheap nuvi w/ bigger screen.
The HH Etrex in not bad when the sun is directly on it, but any other time, reflections make it very hard to see,.......unless in total shade, then it is just fine.
One question,.......
do ya all think the cheapest nuvi (2.5x3.5? screen) will be visable at most all times ?

I use a Garmin Nuvi 205 on my bikes all the time. Yes the screen can be hard to see at times, but isn't too bad. I put a rubber sun screen on mine which helps. The screen is normally easy to see.

I use a Garmin. I've also used the Magellan but prefer the Garmin. To me For me it's easier to read, refreshes faster, and it's menu system makes it easier to use.

Anybody ever tried the TomTom Rider ?

TomTom claim it's designed specifically for motorcycle use, including specific coftware ad Bluetooth sync with your Bt earphones.

I have a Garmin GPS 60. It slips into a mount on the handle bars. I find it hard to read at times while riding. It is easier to pull over and look at it then try and read it while riding. :) kim

that tomtom designed specifically for motorcycles sounds cool.. being able to actually hear the turn by turns would be nice.. I've used a garmin and a tom tom.. prefer the garmin menu naviation and satalite signal it's also faster to load screens and the touch screen seems more acurate. the tomtom has more nicknacks like your speed vs the speed limit, the time, the arrival time, miles left to go, etc.. A sun visor of some sort like on automobile dash boards might be in order. just put a baseball cap on the gps and it'll look cool and be readable..

Now that's my kinda GPS! My last foray into GPS consisted of writing the exit and street number that I wanted on the back of my hand where I could see it though the opening in the back of my glove. ;D

I've been watching these GPS threads though, since I'm thinking of getting one. I have a bad habit of turning down random side roads, just to "see where it goes". It'd be nice to be able to find my way back to civilization. ::)

Edit: the local Bestbuy has a Garmin Nuvi255W in their add for $110; for and extra $40 you get a friction mount and case. Seems like a decent deal I guess. :-/ May have to stop and check one out if I have time on the way to work.

We've used my Son's Motorola Droid cellphone as a GPS while on vacation at the Jersey shore. The Google Map's App is like a GPS. It helped us find several restaurants...... Worked well...

My wife picked up a Magellan Roadmate 2036MU from a co-worker for $50. He used it for one trip and didn't like it. They sell for $139.

We checked it out when we went to my parent's house for my Mom's B-Day this past Sunday. I think it worked fine. Now I have to figure out how to wire it to the bike. It willl only run 2 hrs on the battery... :(

For the Savage, I think the little box might fit in the area where the starter relay is. Or maybe double-side tape it to the inside of the tank tunnel ........

Well, I just ebay ordered a HB mount for a nuvi. All I need now is the nuvi.

Anybody need a brand new HB mount for an etrex ?

I have a question for anyone who uses a cell phone as a GPS. Can the GPS function be used in areas without cell coverage? GPS is worldwide, although I have had problems with it in deep canyons (Glenwood Canyon, for one). There are plenty of areas in the country that have poor or no cell coverage, but where a stand-alone GPS works fine.

Darn 15 year olds..... he said he never lsot service while using it as a GPS.

Sounds like a road trip coming..... The route to my sisters house is thru a valley where we lose cell service. I'll have to get back to you.

You should always have speed, direction and location (Coordinates) on a GPS equiped cel phone.This data is derived from the GPS satellites and is always available.

It's the maps that are down loaded via the cel phone service. If you have no cel service, then you have no maps.
