Title: Amsoil 20w50 OK ?
Post by tonefight on 08/22/10 at 13:13:10

I did type "amsoil 20w50" in the search and got no results so if its been covered very sorry to beat a dead horse.

Anyway I keep a case of Amsoil 20w50 for my other bikes and was just wondering if that would be ok in the savage too. I know it says 10w40 right on the dipstick but figured it wouldn't hurt to get opinions.

the owners manual says 20w50 is ok for higher temperatures.
I think it'd be better to have 10w40 during the winter, and 20w50 during the summer.

That's exactly what I do. That one morning when it was 15F outside last winter, I checked on that half full bottle of 20W-50 Lucas I had stored on the front porch, and when I opened the bottle it seemed pretty thick, almost like gravy what was inside. That's why I put 10W-40 in the bike in winter. But I use The Mobil1 stuff, as the Lucas 10W-40 is only semi-synthetic. I used the 10W-40 in summer also when I first bought the bike, but In 105+ heat here in Oklahoma there was a lot of valve thrashing going on, despite the valves adjustment. Especially since there's quiet a bit of in town riding going on, I didn't trust that stuff. Ever since I use the 20W-50 in the summer heat, the engine runs way smoother with a lot less thrashing. So when it gets to mid October, I put the 10W-40 in and run it until April.

Suzuki says you can use 20w-50w down to 14 degrees. Unless you ride colder than that you can use it year round,I use 15w-50w year round.

You'd probably get a lot more hits if you reduced the search to "20w50"

i use amsoil 10/40 year round
gets below 14 here in the winter, dont ride below 40 but shovel my way to the carriage house every couple of weeks to fire her up, burn off the condensation, keep the battery charged, have a couple of brews to help ward off the cabin fever
i like the 10w for starting when its cccold

You can use any oil you like. The ONLY thing you need to pay attention to is the SAE temp range for oils. The motor company gives a recommendation, but thats all it is. Climate/use dictates oil.
