Got to wondering what spark plug you guys are useing besides the stock NGK DPR8EA-9 (if any?)
Splitfire, iridium ect. (later model s40...if theres any differance from the LS650)
Also what oil filter? (got to get me the mechanics manual for the s40...lol)

I'm using whatever came stock in it, with nearly 7000 miles on it. I haven't even pulled it out to look. It starts and runs just fine, and the gas mileage is still normal (check on Fuelly logo in my signature). Maybe, at the next valve adjustment, I'll pull it out and check the gap. With electronic ignition and unleaded gas, spark plugs last a LONG time.

I run that plug in a 7 heat range.

However, I live at 6500' ASL and rarely leave the city limits on my Savage.

YMMV!

Charon and babyhog, trusting souls are'nt you...lol
Never trust an engineer and what they use stock, cost and effect.
Cheapest cost with the best effect. Theres always better.
THATS why i asked what everyone is useing currently...lol
Kinda hopeing lancer and the other perfomance mech heads will chime in with their preferances. ;D

I guess I should have clarified one point - mine has in it whatever was in it when I got it (2900 miles, now almost 7000), which may not be stock.  Since I recently discovered that the plug over my mixture screw has been removed, I now assume the PO did some work to the bike, so I guess its possible that the spark plug is not stock, but I doubt it.  In essence, I've never looked at the plug.  As long as I'm not experiencing any problems that might be related to it, I'm not messin' with it!

Champion 809/RA6HC about 2 bucks at my local autoparts store. Like Serowbot says works great. I know these thing last a long time but for 2 bucks I have no intention of putting the tank back on a used spark plug.

NGK IRIDIUM                  DPR8EIX-9

I tend to think it has worked better in my machine but it is pretty subjective; can't really nail it down with hard facts
I am much to hard on the throttle to judge it by milage

I'm still running the one I got from you a couple of years ago. 6,000 miles since then. Had it out a couple of weeks ago when I did the valves, and didn't look much different than when I got it. What do you think, is it time for a new one or not?

I've got 16,000 on my DPR8EIX-9 and it is doing fine.

Thank you, I am glad to hear that. Another thing I wanna know is, whenever I have the opportunity to access the spark plug, it doesn't seem as tight as left it the last time. It's not loose by all means but not really tight either. Is that normal on this bike for the plug to loosen up a little over time?

Title: Re: Spark Plug Type
Post by Serowbot on 08/28/10 at 10:13:54

Better to feel loose than tight...  as long as it's not falling out...
... you are threading steel into aluminum after all... ;)...

... always use anti-seize...

Just a smidge, though.  That stuff can be conductive.  DAMHIK!   :-[

An iridium plug won't give you better performance or gas mileage. It will last longer and on COLD startups, needs less instantaneous current and therefore starts the vehicle better. I noticed a significant difference in startup (half the time) by replacing the stock plug with the NKG iridium plug.

You can try the new Pulstar plugs. They work great in my car (better gas mileage AND more hp - the holy grail).

I second that easier cold start with the Iridium plug.

I have a 2005.  I did a search on NGK's website and it pulls up that the only plug for mine is a standard.  Thats with doing the search based on model, it calls out the 2005 s40 all by itself as an 656.  Then you do a search based on engine size, 650, and it pulls up the other year models.  Weird?  What gives?

Title: Re: Spark Plug Type
Post by Charon on 08/29/10 at 06:03:17

Probably a data entry error on their site. To be pedantic, even though it is called a 650, the LS650 is really 652.3 cc (if the 94 mm stroke and bore are taken to be exact). I was looking through kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) and they list the 2007 S40 as 656 cc, too.

I think theres "652CC" somewhere on the jug.

i have to point to it every time someone doesn't believe me what capacity it is.
