Title: Carburator and tank.
Post by DangMan on 08/17/10 at 14:39:23

Today i have gone out and bought a savage more so i can have one stock and one bobbed  :D Im to glad for my firt bike to do something as radical to her.

I god a good price on a 93 savage but there i a small problem ! There is no carburator on it  :-[ so now im on the buyers marked for such a thing. Has anyone tryed with an other carburator, maby with better results. Im not going for power but more how it works with the bike.

An other thing im thinking of changing is the tank to one that holds more fuel, any one that swaps. The issue with the speedometer in the tank is no problem, im thinking of moving that assembly up to the handle bar.

many options....

other than a stock carb rebuilt from ground up with new jets and a secret tweak or two, the best bang for your buck is the Mikuni VM round slide.
It is a great all around carb for a big single;
cheap to buy, easy to work and cheap parts replacement.

the cheapest route is to get a super cheap 36 or 38mm VM on ebay and then rejet to desired configuration for the Savage, with appropriate mounting flange and throttle cable custom made for it.
Expect to spend $150-200 and a lot of time putting it together, jetting and tuning.
It is a fun project if you like to tinker.

I have a rebuilt stock carb if you want one of those.
If you wish to discuss a Performance Carburetor kit then PM me.
You can read of it here:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=120449278314&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT

If you want to talk about how to set up a VM carb on your own let me know and I can give you some guidance to save time and money.

the 34mm Amal carb with cable and jets is a great deal and would be perfect for a stock Savage when performance is not an issue.

The cost for a new Amal with shp from the UK is $300 or more last time I checked.

I'm not a huge fan of bobbers, but do like seeing a bike that is nicely done anyway. The other day on ebay I saw a Savage bobber that had a 3gal Paughco tank that looked really good. Problem was, he completely eliminated the speedo  :( Many other tanks will work, it's just a matter of creating a mount for the Savage  ;)
