Title: Oil leak question
Post by Clint on 08/14/10 at 12:02:22

Hey guys, I have hopefully a quick question.  I have a 87 savage with 18k miles.  The head gasket is leaking oil so I am going to order a new one and replace.  Hopefully this will cure the problem.   My question- looking at bike bandit to order the gasket and I don't see the upper gasket that I see on the bike that I need to replace also.  Its on top of the head. Their is a 25. "Gasket CYL Head" on the parts list but that is not shown?  It is only 2.01 tho and the head gasket is 34.84 so I don't think that is it.  All help will be appreciated.
Thanks,

Clint

the head cover doesn't get a gasket.
it's rtv.

betcha it isn't the head gasket

betcha it is the head plug

it does not require a full motor tear down

lookie here

you can do it in the frame

Verslagen-  Thanks, after a re inspection I realize it is only RTV now.

Oldfeller-  I looked through your link, which one is the "head seal"?

Now that the engine has cooled down I reinspected the leak a little closer.  It seems that the leak is coming from around the exhaust pipe.  Tomorrow I am going to take the exhaust off and see if I can get a better look but is their something behind it or right above it that could cause the leak?  Their is oil at least 2 cooling fins above where the head gasket is so that leads me to believe it isn't the head gasket.  Again, any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks Oldfeller, I thought that was what you were referring too but I wasn't sure.  Would a head plug leak look like it was leaking around the exhaust pipe?

Yes, that's the one OF.  or it can be the rtv on the head cover.

Betcha not the head cover, not with him having it localized to the exhaust pipe area working on his very own ....

Thanks Verslagen,

One more question and I won't bother anyone any more today, promise.  On the parts schematic is shows the cylinder head cap, a nut and a gasket.  I assume I need to order all 3 of these?  A big big thank you to you and Oldfeller for all your help.

Clint

nope, the washer and nut are underneath, check out head retorque.

this is why the plug is there.  and you can reuse the head plug if it ain't boogered up.  just slather it up good with rtv and stick it in.  if it an old style plug get one like OF picture.

Thanks Verslagen. I am going to check it out tomorrow.  I am going to order a gasket from bike bandit and I will check out the cam chain tensioner tomorrow too so I might contact you soon about sending it your way to get fixed.

Ok.  So my plug doesn't look like the one in the picture.  I am going to order a new style plug to replace.  Do you know what year they started with the new style plugs so I can make sure I order the correct one?

Thanks,

Clint

No matter what year you order for you are going to get the new one unless they have old stock.

Generally, part numbers that end in "00" are the original 1986 design.
