Title: Camera/video equipment
Post by babyhog on 08/13/10 at 07:18:03

For those who take pictures and videos while riding, what kind of mounting options do you have, and what have you tried?  I'd love to take some videos....  And what kind of equipment do you like?  Software suggestions for editing too?

I stuck a block of styrofoam on the top of my headlight with a rubber tie down chord with a cut-out in the styrofoam block to tightly hold the camera oriented straight ahead.

Worked great until I caught a video of somebody trying to eat a dirt embankment .....

..... now I don't do that any more .....

You can pick up a Go-Pro and they have with a bunch of different ways to mount onto yourself or your bike.

styrofoam...  hmm, sounds like a logical plan, but I'll take your word for it on the bad luck...

Never heard of Go-Pro, kevin, but thanks for the lead.  Quick browsing looks promising.  I also want to keep bow-hunting in mind.  I'd love to film a hunt too, so that looks like some good options!

I think someone, maybe Paladin, posted something about PVC and bolts and something to mount a camera to the handlebars.  I can't remmebr and too busy/lazy to search right now.

GoPro is the camera of choice for amatuer action video...
It comes with sticky mounts for your helmet and is well protected from the elements in a clear plastic shell...
... on the bad side,... it's very tiny, and has a single button cycling menu that is hard to operate or see...
Here's a link...
http://www.goprocamera.com/

For smooth video on a bike,... helmet mount is the best, and a camera with a wide angle lens will show less jiggle...

My point and shoot camera is 25.5mm wide angle,.. the GoPro camera is even wider,...probably about 20 or 22mm...

For editing,... I just use the Windows Moviemaker that is built in to Windows Xp...  It's not the greatest, but it's good enough, and it's already on my computer...

Take and old helmet drill hole in top but the bolts from a tri pod in the holes,A guy from our snowmobile club did that 30 years ago.

I have tried several types of camera mounts at several locations, handlebars, etc. sidecar, etc.
What works best is a helmet mount.  It totally isolates the camera from vibration and it looks where you look.

Here's the one I got. It was cheap and came with a bunch of mounting options. I mounted mine to my engine guard and it worked pretty good.

AL - surely that's a typo on the size of that thing?  It says: Dimensions (in): 9.9 x 2.8 x 9.8

The ATC-2K is a little cheaper, says the size of it is 2 x 2 x 4.

I like it, and your video looked fine to me!  Well, except for Kel being in it...   ;D

I got one from the same place Al did; compact and like he said, several mounting options.
The model I got, the cheap one, is 2gb capable.  I assume the more expensive can use larger storage chips

I actually bought this one on ebay yesterday.  Didn't want to spend a fortune, not knowing if I'd even use it or like to use it, and this guy is just starting out, so he had some listed starting at 99 cents!  I ended up winning one for less than $20, including $9 shipping!!  So I'm gonna give it a try.  It also has all the mounting capabilities, including a handlebar mount and a little stand I can hook to my tree-stand and try it while hunting too!  I'll post an update after I get it and try it out.  Its not the most hi-tech, but I think it will be sufficient.  We'll see.

Your only drilling one 1/4 inch hole and when you put the bolt in it your plugging the hole,I don't think it would weaken it much at all.

in his defense bill, states with strict helmet laws have to have it DOT approved and stateys are cracking down on that.  by drilling u can in fact negate the DOT approval and run the risk of getting pulled over.  Unless u live in NH of course  ;D

Plus, there's always the possibility that a crack could spider out from that, if impacted at the right angle.  Kinda like a windshield crack starting from one tiny chip.

A around hole isn't a chip or crack.

Post by babyhog on 08/17/10 at 05:38:30

Yea, I ain't puttin' no kind of hole in my brand new helmet, nor my old one for that matter!

I was looking at where to mount it this morning while riding to work.  I'm thinking one of the front signal stems would be an awesome place... maybe...  The center of the handlebars is gonna have the camera looking right at the bottom of my windshield.  Even if I can get it aimed through the windshield, it bounces a bit and I bet that would blur the video.  Will probably try on my body too.

AL, where on the side of your bike did you mount yours?

Title: Re: Camera/video equipment
Post by ALfromN.H. on 08/17/10 at 06:02:58

I 1st tried mounting it to the handlebars but it aims right at the chrome bar on the windshield. So I tried it on the saddlebag. That would have been okay except my hard bags tend to vibrate alot so the video wasn't very good. So next i tried it mounted to the side of my sissybar. That was alot more stable but I got a nice video of my back and not much else. so finally I mounted it to the engine guard and that worked pretty good. As you could see by the video, you can only really see the left hand turns of the bike in front of me but it still worked pretty good. Here's where i mounted it.

Nice, thanks AL, and a picture says a thousand words!  I've got the same engine guard, so that should be a good spot for me too.  I have O-ring pegs, so I might even be able to scoot it out there.  My windshield doesn't have the chrome bar, but it has "Spit Fire" in red letters across the spot where I think the camera would aim on the handlebars.

I got an email that the camera was shipped yesterday, but no tracking dammit!  I can't wait!

Camera came in the mail today.  Wow, its small!  About as big around as a quarter, and as long as the palm of my hand.
I did a few test recordings.  There is no aim, but its not too difficult to aim.  Like pointing a flashlight.  The video is wonderful!  I went for a drive to pick up dinner (couldn't take the bike) but it came with a suction mount, so I stuck it on my car windshield.  The sound was good with my tests at home, but not good in the car.  I don't know if the air blowing was moving across the camera mic or what, but it was horrible.  Even when I stopped at red lights, the sound was still bad, like wind blowing, so it wasn't my window being down.  Hopefully that will be better on the bike, maybe if I put it behind my windshield.  It was fine in the tests at home.  Dogs barking, TV on, voices, etc.  sounded fine.

One button to start/stop.  4 little indicator light to show what function you are in.  Blue=power on.  Green flashes while recording.  Red when charging, flashes when battery is low.  Yellow is standby mode.  Pretty simple.

Other than the sound, other minor complaints -- start/stop button is in the middle, which interferes with the rubber strap that wraps around it to mount on the handlebar (or wherever, but I think the handlebar is gonna be fine).  I'm going to have to move the strap back to the back of the camera, so hopefully that will still be stable/safe enough.  Will see.

Other than that, a cap screws on the back end, like a flashlight, but that is where the power button is, and the mini-SD card goes, and the USB connection.  I wish the power button was on the outside, so it would be easier to turn on and off to conserve battery while not filming.

Acceptable complaints in my book, for the price and the video quality.  So far, I'm pleased....

You might put some rubber foam over were the mic is, even maybe some kind of cloth, then suction it on top of your helmet,No it might blow off.

Sound will likely be even worse on the bike... I tried taping over the mic hole, and that didn't work...
Maybe cloth or foam if you can, like Bill said...

Looking forward to video... ;)...

Hey Piglet, we use our mini cam corder on the bikes. Hubby has a mount on his handle bars. It stays steady and we have used it to on a few trips around the areas. I did, and I've taken some good ones, just haven't had time to do any editing.  Been working on the son's bike and working my buttox off at work.  I hate when work gets in the way of my fun stuff.  LOL  8-)

I rode to work most of the week, and had two days where the sun was directly at my back, so my shadow is riding directly in front of me.  I'll post it as soon as I can get it to music and such...

The Tandem camera that I bought cheap is working well though.  I'm happy with the video quality.  I've tried a few different mounting spots.  I want to make some kind of strap to put around my brake reservoir, to get the camera out past my windshield.  I think it would be a great spot.  The windshield reflects a little, not terribly, but enough to bug me a bit.  Maybe I'll get some stuff done with it this weekend.

I rigged up a bracket that mounted on the windscreen mounts to hold a small digital camera that shoots videos. The big problem was the wind noise getting picked up by the mic. I ended up putting a band aid over the mic hole in the camera which helped a lot. Gotta dig that setup out of the garage and give it another try. I don't use the camera with the windshield cause shooting through the plastic really degrades the video.

ok, here's a boring little video I put together, just part of my every day ride to work.  I liked that it was sunny and I was riding with my shadow.
The camera is still behind my windshield, so please excuse the vibrations and lack of crispness...
But the cheap little camera works pretty well overall.
I'll take more after I figure out a better mounting option.  Ed L -- if you have pics, I'd be interested in seeing your setup.

Thanks guys.  Yep, Boondocks... that's me!  lol  (Dragon NOT!)
Tried something different on the ride home.  Zip-tied the holder to my brake reservoir.  The camera was pointing too far skyward, so I stuck a piece of a stick under the back of it, but it bounced alot!  So I stopped, pulled out the stick, then tried a couple quarters shoved under it to try to give it more angle and it still wasn't good.  When I got home, I strapped it to my right front turn signal stem.  Might just work there.  If I got out later, I'll try it.

Thanks for caring man, but I would never let my guard down on that road.  Lots of angled side streets that people whip out of like they be crazy!  And the peak of the hill that I cross, has a busy cross-road, right at the peak, and its in a bit of a curve.  Its hard to pull out from those side roads, so I always slow down, though many don't.  And then there's the deer, etc, etc.....  yea, never a dull moment on that road, fer shure.

I just said boring because its not all pretty/scenic/etc.  Yet...  Once the trees start changing colors, it will be prettier.

Great video.  Thanks for sharing.

I have to ask, what is that item hanging on the bottom of the left side of your helmet?  You can see something there in the head shots.

Its my communication system - Cardo Scala Rider.  Hubby and I can talk to each other while riding.  It also has FM radio, and bluetooth connection to cell phone.

Well thanks, that makes me feel good, but don't worry, you'll be back in the saddle again soon.   :D

Okay,... I've been playing with my new $1.49 keychain video camera ($16.00 when you add shipping and a 4gig mini SD card from Amazon)...(This camera eats a Gig of memory every 10 minutes, so buy at least a 4 gig card)...(half hour to a an hour of running time on a charge from the built-in lithium battery)...)...
Available here...

... and I noticed this weird, underwater effect when it's hard mounted to the handlebars...
Here's a short video comparison of handlebar mount, and helmet mount...
First is the handle mount, then the helmet...

... and here's an exciting video, I call ...
"Bot returns a video in a ratty T-shirt"... :-?...
(... again demonstrating the underwater vibration effect)...

The nice thing about it on the helmet if you see something off to the side you can get it.

Interesting.  You think maybe the heat could be causing the "underwater" effect?

And I bet you go to bed with that helmet on, don't you?   ;)

(Oh, you need to fix the date on the camera too... haha)

No, not the heat.... turn off the motor, and the effect goes away...

I love my helmet... :-*...

Im hangin on to the flyscreen mounts from the Guzzi. They clamp onto the bars & I Think thers a decent camera mount in there somewhere. Have to do some cutting & threading, but,, Im up for that, one day, maybe.

Hey Bot, what's the fps capture rate on the little key chain camera?  And it didn't look to me like you were swimming while walking.  While the bike was sitting still, it looked ok.  I just saw the waves when the bike was moving.  Will have to re-watch later, can't Youtube at work anymore..... dammit.

I tried a couple different mounting spots yesterday.  This camera came with a suction cup and a 4" post that screws into the suction cup.  I zip-tied the post (without the suction cup) to the base leg of my right mirror, so the angle around the windshield was good, the clarity was good, but it was a bit shaky over about 45 mph.

Then I used the handlebar mount, but strapped it to my front signal stems.  Left signal was pretty good, clear, stable up to about 50 also, but watching the video didn't "feel" like riding.  I guess it was too far forward on the bike.  I still haven't tried Al's spot on the highway bar.  Will do that next.  And I'm still trying to figure out a helmet mount, or somewhere on my body.
