Title: Rear brake squeals
Post by rl153 on 08/11/10 at 15:07:37

If the rear brake squeals intermitently when applied, does that mean you need new shoes ?The bike has 3.3k miles . Supposedly the first owner didn't use the rear brake much .Other than that it slows good when applied .Thanks

Mine squeals like a a semi truck. I even had it apart, and the thickness is still pretty good. I sanded the drum and sanded the shoes and after a few times using the rear brake it came back. It is especially bad in the mornings when the humidity is high. And then it also bites like a mad chain dog locking it up with little pressure. It is annoying as heck and I don't know what to do about it. Next time I might go ahead and file the leading edge with a 45 degree angle like we used to do on the beetles when we riveted new pads on the shoes.

Both front and back tend to squeal.
I was advised to get the backs hot, and then the squeal will go away.
Now I use the backs lightly when ever I'm slowing and it hasn't come back.

You mean I should like go on the Interstate at night, when there's almost no cars around and crack it open to about 90 and then stomp on the rear without locking the tire to about 30, and do this a couple more times?

None of the brakes on mine (see signature) squeal, so I can't help you there.  But I gotta tell ya, if you need new rear brake shoes at 3300 miles, you've got a bigger problem with the brakes than a squeal.

I'm guessin' that you've got lots of brake shoe left back there.
