Title: Cutting Sissy Bar while still on the bike?
Post by Joe F on 08/09/10 at 05:33:05

I was thinking of cutting my Sissy Bar down so that the brackets are the same height as my luggage rack. Then I could put a bigger case to replace my ammo can on the rack.  The 50 cal can fits great turned sideways but I'd like something a little bigger.  I'm kind of lazy and am wondering if I could use a Harbor Freight side cutter to cut the bars off while they are still on the bike. How bad an idea is this?

  • Tell wife its a good day to go out for the day
  • Roll bike out of garage into empty driveway
  • tape the sissy bar and draw a line from the rack across the tape to know where to cut.
  • Remove Rack
  • Cover back half of bike in something (wet carpet, plywood, rubber mat, something non-flammable)
  • Cut off bars
  • Clean up
  • Re-mount rack

I did mine that way to get the height right for the bar I later welded across the remaining uprights to start the manufacture of a mount for a package rack that replaced the rear pillion. It is solid steel so have more than one cutoff disc for the grinder and cover the bike well, very well with non-flamable material. I have an old wool blanket that came with the shop that I used for a spark shield. Max

The ammo can is a perfect fit.
