Title: 5th gear Post by bill67 on 08/04/10 at 16:49:29 5th Gear |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by DrunkenDwarf on 08/04/10 at 17:48:01 25% of the time normal. 75% of the time I have to hold up on the shifter while letting out on the clutch to get it to shift. -D. Dwarf |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by verslagen1 on 08/04/10 at 17:51:39 once upon a time, long, long ago, when I used to use dino m/c oil, it would occasionally stick. Now that I use RotSyn it don't. |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by Paladin. on 08/04/10 at 19:54:04 5th gear is as easy as 1st thru 4th. My problem is when I try to get into 6th gear. |

Title: Re: 5th gear Post by Routy on 08/04/10 at 22:17:23 Clutchless works perfect Clutching it, 5th can be a little sticky at times |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by cursal on 08/05/10 at 07:44:30 Never an issue, easy as 1st-4th here as well. Although, 1st-2nd sometimes sticks in "N" |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by Tanker2Biker on 08/05/10 at 07:51:27 Sometime a problem, and it diesn't feel like there is as much travel in the shifter when going into 5th. |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by Starlifter on 08/05/10 at 08:15:34 Easy as pie. |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by ralfyguy on 08/05/10 at 10:38:40 Overall shifting is very easy as long as the drivetrain is still cold on mine. The hotter it gets the more trouble shifting I get. Especially 1-2 and 2-3 and 3-2. 2-1 is actually fairly smooth all the time, but 1-2 sticks often and I have to try a 2nd time. It goes to neutral first, and then I have to take off the foot and then try again and it goes into 2nd. I also noticed the lower the rpm he easier it goes into 2nd. Rev it to more that 3,000 in 1st and it will give me troubleI. But only when hot. I used Mobil1 20W-50 Full Synthetic V-Twin and it was worse. So I went back to Lucas 20W-50 Full Synthetic V-Twin. Summers in Oklahoma are very hot. I tried Mobil1 10w-40 Motorcycle oil in summer and the valvetrain is thrashing too much for my taste, especially when hot. Also the shift quality suffers more with the thinner oil. With Lucas 20W-50 it runs quiet and shifts smoother. The valves are set correctly. Should I try some other Oil? |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/05/10 at 11:04:25 You ever try shifting it like youre racing? |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by sjaskow on 08/05/10 at 11:21:49 Mine seems to depend on how long I wind out 4th. If I short-shift it into 5th, it sticks. Wind it a bit and it's fine. Oh, to turn this into an oil thread, I run http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/motoroil/oils/mobil_1_v-twin_20w-50.aspx and have since about 1K miles. |

If Lucas is better than Mobil-1 try Klotz the next time. |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by PerrydaSavage on 08/05/10 at 13:32:59 Never ever had a problem with 5th gear on either of the LS650's I've owned ... |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by drums1 on 08/06/10 at 09:22:44 Mines an '87. I don't have a 5th gear. Wish I did. Maybe then it wouldn't scream at 4000 rpm when I'm going 65. |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by bill67 on 08/06/10 at 09:58:19 No it wouldn't scream at 4000 it would scream at 3900,Bad mistake Suzuki made when they went to the 5 speed. |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by ralfyguy on 08/06/10 at 12:10:33 Mine is turning 4,100 at 60mph in 5th gear. |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by prechermike on 08/06/10 at 12:22:55 I have tried and tried and just can't get mine into 5th gear! :( |
Title: Re: 5th gear Post by BurnPgh on 08/06/10 at 14:59:10 I voted normal because the issue seems like a relatively wisespread and "normal" issue. Used to be that Id shift into 5th and it'd feel like it shifted but didnt. Once or twice Id hit a hidden neutral between 4th and 5th but that was rare. For a while Id just make the shifting motion twice without letting loose of the clutch lever. If the lever didnt move the seond time I was already in 5th, if it did well...if I wasnt in 5th I would be after the second motion. I noticed that it would shift every time at highway speeds without an issue but had a 50/50 chance at anything lower than 50 in 4th to 5th. Nowadays I just keep upward pressure on the shift lever while letting out the clutch lever or shift clutchless into 5th. No problems with that so far, though admittedly I didnt solve the issue but just adapted to it |

Title: Re: 5th gear Post by Routy on 08/12/10 at 04:42:18 Joking aside,..... I know, them Suzy engineers are so stupid ! Too bad they aren't as smart as you guys that think these 25 hp bikes are so underdriven. Myself, if I really thought that way, I think I'd get tired of coming here wining all the time, and either junk this thumper, and buy a real motorcycle, or else do something about it. Just a matter of a few bucks for a chain/belt swap, and you can have any gear ratio you want. Then you could be happy.........instead of a winer. :'( ;D |
