Title: POPPING AFTER DRAG PIPE INSTALL
Post by Joe C on 08/01/10 at 18:40:02

I just put some blue collar bobber pipes on my girlfriends and now the bike seems to pop a bit.  Is there a way to fix this?  Do I need to rejet or can I somehow adjust the mixture screws?  What about putting a baffle in?  Any suggestions on what baffles will work best?
Thanks

You could go back to stock,, orrejet, or baffle the BCB pipe, BUt why BUY the thing just to choke it back to the flow rate of stock?

You can rejet in oless time than building a baffle into the new pipe AND, itll run better.

I don't know how to rejet, or what size jets to use.  I'm an idiot with carbs

When does it pop?
How does it pop?
Do you like pop?

Pops when I let off the gas. Pops out of the back of the exhaust.  She does not like pop.

the BCB drag pipe already has a baffle in it. it is not just a piece of pipe. a lot of guys stock pipes backfire or "pop"

Is it a shift pop or engine brake pop?

Is it a pop, Pow or KERPOW?

I believe it's an engine brake pop.

if it's a shift pop, usually that means you got an air leak either the headers loose or muffler clamp.
now engine brake jacob brake kinda with popping, not much you can do about that.  you might try to set the idle higher, say 14 or 1500 rpm.

will need to retune it regardless if u rejet or not.  also its a fact of life with those bikes that it will always gurgle or poot when you start messing with rich/lean.  if your more then three turns out with the mixture screw then you will need to rejet.  rejetting is easy even a caveman can do it  ;D  this thread has great pix and you can figure out where they go.

How can i tell if my mixture screw is more then 3 turns out?  Should I screw it all the way in and see how far it goes?    I guess since it's backfiring it's running too lean.  What way to I need to turn to enrighten the carb?  Sorry for all the stupid questions I'm just a bit nervous working with carbs since they are so precise.

Turn the screw cw be carefull not seat it hard as it might get stuck.
Count as you go in so you can back it out the same amount.

search "carb tuning" and you will find step by step instructions.  remember to first warm the bike up then when you are turning the screw out "counterclockwise" that you do it in 1/4 turn increments and give it half a minute between each turn.  basically you are listening to when the engine falters on either end (turning in, and turning out) those are your limits and then you turn out based on the average between the two limits.  the thread expains it perfectly
