Title: Difficult 5th gear
Post by dv8savagerider on 08/01/10 at 13:35:08

I am new to this forum and this is my first post/ question.  A couple of months ago i purchased a 2001 Suzuki Savage with only 3000 miles on it.  It runs great with the exception of the common backfire issue which i am working on.  There is one thing that i cant quite figure out though- it seems to shift hard going into 5th gear.  Sometimes it will go right into the gear and sometimes it seems like it clicks twice getting into gear.  Is this a transmission issue/ rpm issue/ or maybe just finding the right "sweet spot" issue?  Does anyone else have these problems and if so what did you do to fix it?  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Just part of the charm of the Savage. Its common & hasnt caused any real ( read: Spend $$$ on it) problems. Ive noticed that if I go for a clutchless shif into 5th, I dont feel that. I also shift, hit the gas, let off & then, TRY to drive it on in to 5th,, It rarely moves a bit more.

Thanks for the reply- thats what i was kinda hoping for - just a part of its charm :)

I think its getting used to I don't find it any harder going in to 5th than any other bike,Synthetic motorcycle oil does seem to make all bikes shift slightly easier.I use Klotz racing synthetic.

Thanks- I just changed the oil prior to posting this hoping that might help, next time i might go with the synthetic...any opinion on Amsoil?  thats what i run in my autos

The key to easy shifting is not to force it.
apply pressure in the direction you want to go, squeeze the clutch, adjust the throttle and if it hasn't gone already apply more pressure to get it into gear.  Let out the clutch and it should be there.

This works at a dead stop too.  just don't let the clutch out all the way or you'll be shittin' your pants.

Amsoil should be good and shift easier

I use Lucas Oil. I seem to be the only one.

I use a secret oil, but it doesn't change the tranny shift.
Very simple,...just hold pressure on the shifter till the clutch is dumped. It will either shift or miss a gear, and it never misses a gear.

Backfire ? Stop it ? Many men tried, many men failed. Some even think they stopped it, and some did, but only till they turned their back on it. I love it !

Yeah the backfire is growing on me, lol.  Its funny to see people duck when you drive by

You're looking for a WHOOSH or PHOOT as far as the backfire goes. I havent been able to get any better than that.
As far as 5th...its normal. You can clutchless shift it, keep upward pressure on until you fully let out the clutch lever, or F*** 5th. Its pretty much useless anyway.

apparently you dont let her get above 50 mph, poor thing must be chomping at the bit  ;D

The difference between 4th and 5th is only 300 rpm. It's a highway gear?  ::)

I think the top gear ratio is set by trade agreement
otherwise HD would never catch up to us.   ;D

Sometimes funny, but I drive in parts of Houston where that noise could get you shot by somebody!

I'm not sure why people say 5th is useless. ???

I know once I hit 50-60 I shift to 5th and I can feel the power difference not to mention she sounds better at 65 in 5th than 4th.

Say I never used 5th gear...how does that affect cam chain stretching over time?
say I cruised 70- 80 in 4th?
Any extra damage or wear to worry about?

5th gear should be about 600 rpm less instead a 300 rpm,High rev motors have close ratios, Torque y motors should be wide ratio.

There is a very good reason why its not 600 rpm less,.....
these engines...stock simply do not have enough horsepower to run that slow at freeway speeds. Even 5th gear is too high at 70 mph now,......the engine is working hard ! I happen to have a vacuum mounted, and see very little vacuum,.....almost nothing at 70 mph,.....not a good thing. And if you were to use a higher 5th gear at 45-50, its ok, untill you want to accelerate much at all, then you are chugging it to death,......you know,.....like tryin to hammer the crankshaft right out of it. So that means shifting to 4th all the time, so then why have a higher 5th gear

I have NEVER seen a problem from spinning an engine fast, but I have had disasterous results from working an engine too hard, like sticking a piston at 70 mph, all from working the engine too hard.
I think Suzuki has it right.

I had 2 Suzuki GR 650 geared 1000 rpm less than stock,Thats in high gear ,Drove them 28000 miles and never had a problem,Got as high as 68 miles to gallon one time on trip. And I alway had 4th if I needed more power,But probability never had to over 2 or 3 times. I love the low rpm  cruising down the freeway.they were torquy engines too.

Turning a little over 5,000rpm at 75mph. Not sure if I would call it chugging. That is more than 3/4 of the rpm range, just almost 1,500rpm shy of redline. At a little over 5,500rpm it starts to lose HP, with going down drastically

How many cars to day will red line in high gear I doubt any will.........Also when I was out riding yesterday I tried the 4-5 shift a lot of times with and with out clutch,To me it shifts easy either way,So I don't know why it seems a lot of people have trouble with it.

My 5th gear is a bit cranky, but I only use it over 50 or so which isn't often. We usually cruise at 45-50 on country roads in 4th at 3800. I have a cheap $35.00 tach that I bought for this very reason. I try to keep it below 4000. That's when I go into 5th.  :)
