well i haven't taken it on the road yet cause i'm not finished but just turning the throttle here in the driveway it sounds exactly like i wanted it to. a lot deeper than the dyna i had and more grumble. it is definently louder but not plug-your-ears loud

i cant really say enough good stuff about blue collar bobbers. you definently get your money's worth from these guys and the instructional dvd is awesome. this was really a good route to go for me on my first bobber. hopefully by the time i do another one i will have learned how to weld and i can do everything on my own.

how much heat wrap did u use to completely cover the header pipe?

Title: Re: bobbin' with some BCB stuff
Post by RTC on 07/31/10 at 21:57:51

i can't really say for sure it was what came with the exhaust from BCB

Title: Re: bobbin' with some BCB stuff
Post by RTC on 07/31/10 at 21:59:30

as a side note....you should wear some gloves or something when installing the heat wrap. if you have ever ran fiberglass insulation in a house without gloves and a short sleeve tshirt then you can imagine what i felt like last night.

Hey do u think u could take some shots of how the rear fender is mounted? And what happens to the rectifier

i dont have a rear fender. i will eventually put a really short trailer fender on it. the BCB seat kit comes with a nicely machined bracket to mount the rectifier on top of the battery box. check out their website and you will see where it's mounted

there is a baffle through most of the pipe but you can see light through the other end so it's not much restriction. i'll be interested to see how it performs. i was about to put it together today and ride but i went to rinse the tank out with gas before putting it on and found out that the paint i used doesnt like gas on it :-[. i resanded, repainted, and got some clear engine paint which is drying as we speak. maybe i can assemble tonight so i can ride to work in the morning.

that's the worst thing about doing stuff like this. i get in a rush cause i love to ride.

ok here's some pics of what i've finished so far...exhaust, lights, seat, fender removed, bike painted. carbs got rejetted again too. i was way lean on a 52.5 pilot and 150 main so i went up to a 55 pilot with bleed holes and a 152.5 main. i used to have to hold WOT while i started my bike and now i simply hold the clutch and push the button. i only have my mix screw about 1/8 turn out so it may be a little rich in there but for now it's running great.

the exhaust is great. i feel that it has improved my performance and sounds waaaay better. it's actually pretty quiet on the highway. it's definitely not too loud. the seat is super comfy as well.

i was going kind of for a similar look of an old BSA M20 google it and let me know how i'm doing

i still need to put on some handlebars and a trailer fender cut really short. the liscence plate is illegal for now(not lit) cause i haven't put the bracket on yet. more pics to come as i make improvments..thanks for all your help guys!

i am very happy to ride it right now. it's just such a fun process to transform my bike and make it original. i haven't seen another savage in el paso, much less a savage bobber so it turns quite a few heads and feels perfect underneath me. best of all, i don't think i've even put $3000 into this bike yet.

What a great look for a bobber, I like the old style bikes and I think you have really captured some of that feeling. The colors are perfect, Can't wait till I can start learning a bit more about mechanics and find time to Bob mine.... :)

so question on the painting of the tank.  did you rattle can it or get it painted professionally?  if you rattle canned it, how easy/how long was it to get the old paint off and prime and get the new paint on?

Sorry to be late to the bobbin' party.  I'm building a CB500T cafe racer, hanging out at caferacer.net and dotheton.com - and not giving SuzukiSavage.com the attention deserved.

I'll second (or third) the props for Lance at BCB.  He's created ingenious engineering solutions to bobbing our Savage, and produces high quality products and terrific customer service.  Five stars!

His rear fender kit includes a replacement, machined rear axle, long enough to snug in the rear wheel (of course) but also to hold rear fender struts.  Very clever.

A few weekends ago I won first place Best Metric at a ride-in bike show here in southwest Michigan.  Several Harley dudes actually asked: "what did you do with the other cylinder..."

Two pics of the bob-job.  Color is British Racing Green, a fifties/sixties favorite for Jags, Healeys, MGs, Lotus:

http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu42/stevene44/Motorcycles/BCBTank.jpg

Here's a 'vision' of the cafe racer I'm working toward.  Tank, seat, headlight bucket coming from Benjie's Cafe Racer (see here http://www.benjiescaferacer.com/home.html ); shocks, pipes, rear sets coming from Omar's DTR (see here http://www.omarsdtr.com/index.html ):

The bobber and (still under construction) cafe are happily coexisting in the shop - at least, so far.

Best-

H-Brown:

I had my tank, fenders & side covers painted by a local shop in Florida, mixing the PPG formula for British Racing Green I was after.  His pin stripe 'guy' did the old school, hot rod striping on the tank top - freehand, no tape.  The key was to clear coat the tank several times after paint; then lightly sand the clear; do the striping; then several clears to finish.

The striper was an old guy (like me!) that had fond memories of the old hot rod days.  I gave him several pics of examples, but also gave him a free hand to make his own design, just creatively using the 'triangular' space between the bottom of the speedo and the front of the seat.

His fee: $60 (!)  I had three times that in my pocket, unsure of what the final bill would be...

Find a sentimental older dude to do your job.  I doubt you'll get the bargain I did, but you'll likely be very happy with his work.

Best-

stevene

RTC, do you find the seat is positioned pretty much the same as stock? I've been thinking the springer seat may give the couple of inches of leg room I like. I was trying to avoid the forward controls. Right now, if I slide back on the stock seat a couple inches it feels right.
thx

that's hard to say. i know that it positions me better so that i am not sliding forward but i can't say that it makes for more room. it is pretty comfortable. i got the small sized seat which is actually a medium size compared to the small they used to offer at BCB a large one might be more comfortable for some but i don't think it would look right on our bike. it works good for me...70" 160lbs

I love the bobber kit from BCB.  I am going to order one soon.  My only concern is I have a 140/90/15 on the back and it says you have to stay with the 140/80/15.  will it be ok with the 140/90?  How is the seat comfort compared to stock?

i believe its just the rear fender u would have issues with if u had a bigger tire.  could leave it naked

yep the fender sits really close to the wheel. i opted not to get the fender and for now i am naked. i like being naked.
i picked up some sportster bars at the HD shop for $10 today and put them on tonight. i don't really like the pics in the dark but you get the point.

I read the article on the trailer bobber build, I am seriously thinking about doing the bobber build but dont want to pay BCB 700 bucks!  Any other good articles out there that describe how to mount the rear fender mount a new seat.

IF I can ever get around to it,I'm going to try and get a kit together or individual parts with different options. They're not hard to do,I know some guys live in apts.and such that can't fab parts.I'll probably even be able to paint the parts to match,so it'll be a bolt on and ride....done.I've done a couple of fenders for guys on here already.

I have to agree with the looks of the seat. It's nice that it all bolts on without having to cut anything, but think it just looks "clunky" almost.

I've been debating about how to handle my rear fender braces and asked if they would sell those alone. They said they normally don't, but would make an exception. I need to give them a buzz about that still.

RTC,
I just took off my rear fender and relocated my solenoid and rectifier. I thought I could figure out a way to make the stock tail light and signals work but I can't. I was thinking about buying the rear light and signal kit from BCB but I don't want the whole bobber kit. Do you think the those lights would work with the stock seat or are those lights just made to work with BCB's seat kit?

Title: Re: bobbin' with some BCB stuff
Post by Hashbrown on 09/27/10 at 06:08:10

RTC...you might be able to make the rear signals fit but the rear taillight will def need some sort of bracket to mount.  its basically a knock off of a 1931 ford model A taillight.  BCB does a great job in making a bracket to hold both the signals and tail light.  i saved some money and got the actual lights on ebay and just bought the seat bracket from them

Does The bcb seat come with a spot to mount the rectifier and solenoid? How much was it?

Title: Re: bobbin' with some BCB stuff
Post by Hashbrown on 09/28/10 at 07:39:42

the kit is $700 for the seat bracket, seat, licence plate mount and rear fender.  you can buy the pieces sepretly, id give them a call to work that out.  the solenoid mounts very nicely to the seat bracket but i didnt like the small bracket to mount the recifier on the battery box.  first you have to drill the bat box to mount the rect and it doesnt look very clean.  i yanked the airbox and side covers out and mounted the rect to the fram in the back and use a cone filter.  as pricey as the kit may seem, the quality is excellent.

no i ended up getting the bracket, seat, rear fender, and licence plate from them.  i got the actual signals from ebay and i didnt go with their bars or pipe as i have a supertrapp and mini apes.
