Post by rwevil? on 07/29/10 at 18:56:36

hey, can anyone help me? i have an 86....i have done all kinds of work to it and recently it started backfiring and caughing through the carb...we adjusted the valves which did not help...i then switched engines (I have a parts bike luckily) as soon as i got it all back together it does  the same thing....i switched cdi boxes and checked the valves ....they seemed fine....any advice?

when does it backfire?? and technically a backfire comes out the carb.... is that the case or do you have popping and explosions in the exhaust..... does it do it under acceleration, at cruise, or on decell......

if it popping in the exhaust and it does it on the throttle, it's probably jetted too lean.... if it pops at cruise, probably a vacuum leak and if it pops on decell, probably an exhaust leak at the head.

When you adjusted the valves...
did you rotate the crank CCW? same way as wheels go forward?
Did you set them while on the TDC after the intake valves close?

Have you done a compression test?

is the parts bike same year or before 90?
