Title: Ordered a new rear tire this a.m.
Post by babyhog on 07/28/10 at 09:43:34

Well, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a new rear tire.  Called a few stealerships, and decided on a local bike shop (ex Indian motorcycle dealer), closer to my house than the Suzuki shop.  He ordered me a Dunlop D404  140/90.

Please tell me that I'm gonna be happy with this tire....     :-/

Yea, bill, I actually liked the looks of the Pirelli, but since you recommend it, I stayed away from it...    ;D
Ha ha I'm teasing you.  Actually he checked several brands, but Pirelli wasn't one of them, sorry.

That OK just be careful when your riding on that Dunlop. No sharp corners, never in the rain.

Bill are you saying the Dunlop won't hold the corner and will slide in the rain?  :-?

i know their are huge differences between different tires but lets face it any major tire company isnt going to put out a tire that is unsafe to ride on.  otherwise they would never be in business.  a brand new tire from a decent company will be fine regardless, the main issue is longevity.  as long as you got good tread you can trust the rubber.  maybe im being naive but thats my opinion.

A new tire will be great when you first put it on. After a few hundred miles you will really notice the difference.

I use the 66 Route Pirelli on front and back and very happy with them.

Hey, Serowbot is riding with one and gives it good reviews. Hard to beat a testimonial of a product user and avid savage lover :)

Tires are the most important parts on a bike imo, outside of the thing that sits on the seat.

Do these replacements get better milage ? I just turned 5,000 mi, and I don't see the rear getting to 6,000 safely. Seems kinda terrible mileage for todays tires.

Title: Re: Ordered a new rear tire this a.m.
Post by cursal on 07/28/10 at 21:54:19

I've got just over 2,000 miles on mine  so far and they don't show much, if any, wear at all.

I ride daily in town and on the slab, and just long rides out in the country.
As for conditions I ride in rain, shine, even some pretty cold weather. The Savage is my ride. 8-)

I think I got 12k or 14k out of my first Dunlop...

Piglet,... be careful the 25 miles or so... new tires are very slippery until you wear off the mold release coating... ;)...

My OEM IRCs have just over 4000 and are still in really good shape. I run Dunlop 404s on my 900 Vulcan and think they are great they handle well wet or dry. Was thinking of getting a set for the S40 when the IRC do go, If your 140-90s work as well as my 180-70 you'll like em just fine.

REMEMBER, It'll have mold release agent on  it & will be a bit slimier than after a couple hundred miles. Dont go trying it too hard in corners just cuz ya got new runner, okay?

I alway rough up new tires with a belt sander,Let the sander spin the tire.I clean them with whitewall cleaner first.

Wow, good info about the first miles.  I didn't know that!  Thanks a bunch!

FYI, just turned 6000 on my stock IRC.  It was a little cupped when I got it (2900 miles), but once I aired it up good, it seemed to have leveled out some.  The tread is just worn, and I noticed a little cut that made me nervous, so I wanted a new one.  Will see what the man says when I take it in.

To those running this tire, are you running it tubed or tubeless??

Title: Re: Ordered a new rear tire this a.m.
Post by bill67 on 07/29/10 at 05:18:31

You have to run tubed with spoked wheels.Air would go out were the spokes are.

Oh, duh, good point.  Sorry, that was elementary of me.

Has anyone ever found a loose spoke? or had to tighten them?

Iwas "clinkin" on a wheel & found a couple loose.. been a long time & cant remember if it was front or rear.

Cursal - What size did you put on the back?  I put on a 140/90-15 and I think its to big, probably should be 140/80?  Is that what the stock tire was, I can't remember. But  I needed a tire and the 140 was all shop had - it is rubbing the sides of the tire.
Thanks! C

I ran a brand new set of the Dunlops for 1 summer (about 12000 miles) they track poorly on grooved pavement, they don't feel confident in the corners and they were scarey in the rain..... I've since changed to the Mezzeler Me880 and love them..... the straight line stability is great, very sure footed in the corners especially fast with high lean angle and they have excellent grip in the rain........... I probably ride harder and faster than most people so I'm sure for many riders the Dunlops are good enough...... but not on my bike

BILL:
I had the same dunlop on my bike for 8,000 Miles... Did the Dragon and the Cherohola on it and had no problems, I ride about 300 days a year. In all kinds of weather and never had a problem with it. where are you getting your INFO?

While this is a list of tires available for the Ninja 250, they name a lot of brands and offer opinions. My guess is that the same brand and type of tire would perform similarly in different sizes.

Ive got about 10k miles on a set of Bridgestone Spitfires.
front is still good, rear is starting to thin out, but will pass inspection and will finish out this year with them.
They are tubeless type, I may try the sealant trick to eliminate the tube.
sposed to be dual compound, I can only compare them to the stockers (much better).

The spit fires rate 2nd to the route 66 pirelli,They are a good tire thats what I used to use.

I have the 140/90 15  on mine rear and it fits fine. Not even close to rubbing.

Well, got the tire installed this afternoon.  Rode fine on the way back to work.  I'll be a little nervous until the "newness" wears off.  But so far, so good!   :)

Oh, we looked at the old IRC.  It had been cut and patched.  I don't guess that's too un-common, but I'm sure glad to have a nice new one.

Babyhog, be sure to check your speed against your bike with a gps.
I changed to a 140/90 from a 140/80 and my speedo(which was accurate to within 1mph before) is now almost 6mph off. Read 65 be doing 71...lol

anybody else notice the speedo is off with a 140/90?
I never check after I put on new tires.

6 miles under could get me a ticket when I think I'm doing 70 in  65 and I'm really doing 76!

you know the ol' saying of keeping under 10 miles over to avoid the tickets ;)

Title: Re: Ordered a new rear tire this a.m.

I usualy ride with my gps set to speed, max speed and avg speed on one screen plus the trip meter.
With the 140/80 i ran right at 60.5 to 60.7 on the gps and 60 on the speedo.
Got out with the 140/90 expcting 'maayybe' a mile or so off. Surprised me when my speedo said 60 and the gps said 66.3
Avgs at 5-6 mph over. This at varying speeds.

Post by FlybysBlvd on 08/03/10 at 04:27:45

I haven't checked my speedo, will have to do that.
I did have to take the "stock" saddlebag supports off because that what was rubbing the 140/90.  Adjusted shocks and all is good, did over 400 miles on the weekend and rode just fine and no more rubbing.
Thanks Cursal! I found your old post referencing the rubbing of the tire, we investigated and found it was the supports.

140/90 vs 140/80 should = a little over 3" in the circumference.

Title: Re: Ordered a new rear tire this a.m.
Post by babyhog on 08/03/10 at 05:43:09

Yea, I'll have to check the speedo.  It seemed off before, just judging by hubby riding behind me in 4 different vehicles.  (2 bikes, 2 cars).  He always said I was going faster, in relation to his speedo at the time, than my speedo said I was.  Don't have a gps to test with.  Tried the Interstate mile-marker to mile-marker test, but it was windy that day, and hilly, and I couldn't keep a good steady speed for any of the miles that I was actually able to look at my watch's second hand.  LOL  So I need to try it again.  Thanks for the reminder!

And my ride home --  whew, I had one little scare.  I think its mental, since being warned about the new tires, but I went around one S-curve and thought I was gonna lose it.  Didn't ride to work today, figured I'd take it out this evening and do some gentle city riding, slow cornering...  I hate being nervous while I'm riding!

Just dont go running into a corner that creates a lean angle thats muchgreater from the last 5 or so on that side. Youll slowly wear the slikkery stuff off. Id bet a good degreaser would be a fine idea. Might not be the whole answer, care is still the prescription.

I would'nt use a degreaser on my tires!
BH, just cut your avg speed by 10 less then you normaly ride and hit the sharper corners at an easier pace for a few days.
Had mine now for 4 days and got about 300 on it. Got all my lil rubber nips wore off...lol
I did'nt notice mine being much slicker. No pucker moments, just a couple of 'Hmmmm.....it might of slipped a bit in that last 90...i think'.lol My old one was cupping bad, id ran the last mile out of it literaly. Could stick your finger through in one spot...lol
I did notice an improvement in cornering after the first 100miles or so.

Just get out and ride it BH, rack up some easy miles just cruiseing and cornering easy for a bit. Rideing in GRAVEL will help scrub it off faster to!...lol
Dont be nervous either. Relax and be one with the bike. Learn to feel its lil quirks. Over thinking can be just as bad as oversteering. Just relax and be 'in the moment' on the bike.

I had pleanty of room under the fender for mine, not even close to rubbing. Stock 07 with OEM bag supports.
140/90 is 'maybe' 1/4 in taller, width is the same. Should'nt rub. Oversized nuts?

Title: Re: Ordered a new rear tire this a.m.
Post by Educatedredneck on 08/03/10 at 22:35:04

If you change the inside nuts to round (cheese) head Allen bolts, you can run up to a 150/80 tire.  That is what I have on my bike at the moment, and with the Allen bolts - NO RUBBING!!!.
