Title: Quick easy Question
Post by FrankYoungWolf on 07/28/10 at 08:10:46

I keep hearing everyone talk about a reserve tank on their Savage, after having to push mine once or twice, ( those suckers are heavier then you would think) I don't know or cannot figure out my reserve tank or how to fill it. does it have anything to do with the fuel cutoff switch on the side by the choke? thanx guys!!

It fills when you fill the tank so don't need to worry about anything.

cool I thought that might be how it worked but wasn't sure if I was missing anything.. As far as the cut off switch goes I have it pointing towrds the rear of my bike I'm guessing thats right as I do get about 10 miles a tank, however is there a way to switch to the reserve?

You have to turn the stem over to RES to get the reserve fuel.... if your petcock is stock.

If its the stock mechanism, normal riding "ON" - is pointing down.  Pointing toward the back of the bike is PRIme; pointing forward is REServe.

reserve is pointed to the front.Pointed to the back is prime

i could be mistaken but if you have it pointing to the rear of the bike your on Prime "PRI".  that bypasses your main/reserve tank and just dumps fuel into your carb through gravity rather then vacuum and will continue to do so until your outta gas (ie no reserve) .  again look at the petcock but if memory serves me right, pointing it down is your main tank and pointing it forward is your reserve.  just look at where is says "ON" and "RES" and know that "PRI" is prime.

There's an arrow on the petcock itself pointing to where you turn it.

Just reverse the reserve lever.

cool thanks folks this helps a lot, ( as always.) I always feel like a noob when I come on here, but after a while I'm sure I'll start feeling better about this stuff.

As several have said, long arm pointed down is RUN, long arm pointed forward is RESERVE.  If you ride with the lever in RUN till it starts to sputter, you can reach down and switch it forward before it dies completely, and then drive to the gas station.

When I first got my Savage 7 months ago, I was riding happily along when the engine quit.  I pulled over and tried to re-start with no success.  I put down the stand, got off, said offensive things to it >:(, and then got back on and tried to start again, and it did :-?.  Got about a block and quit again.  Went through the same routine, and about that time I realized I was out of gas ;D, switched over to RESERVE and was fine.  Seems that as I got on and off and leaned the bike from side to side, a small amount of fuel was sloshing over to the main side from the reserve, and giving me just enought to re-start.  Another lesson learned, this one about paying attention to the odometer!

One thing to remember (and I will not discuss how I know this ;)), is to be sure and turn it back to RUN after you get to the gas station.   Otherwise, you are running using the reserve portion of fuel as well as the main, and you won't have a reserve.

Oddly enough, the instructions for the petcock lever can be found in the Owner's Manual.

All you have to do is find the owner's manual.
