Are youa welder?

Do you need the whole bike, or just either end?

Assuming that just about anyone has a decent auto jack.  Thus:  Front: one brick.   Rear: some rope and stakes.

I don't think you could come cheaper.

i got cheaper!! found the idea on a
3year old or older post on bike lifts
made mine with 2 4x4s and a 2x4 to splice them together..
3/4" hole thru one end  that  a 1/2" galv. pipe slides into for leverage..
been using it since i got my 06 new
oil changes,brake pads,belt alignments etc

You wouldn't believe how easy it is to work,No problem lifting my 1500 either,Which weights twice as much as S40.

i drilled a hole cause i dont trust pipe flanges for the lateral forces from the handle  plus saved another $5

I drilled a hole too for the pipe

I do this every time, works and is VERY sturdy. Could run up and kick it and it won't budge.

I have never taken any clases in welding but im pretty good at it.
Last week i welded a rake to use with the tractor so that i can maintain the misses riding place.

I was thinking something in the line of this one.

I think it is this one they have used as a jack
http://www.primusdanmark.dk/images/TJM1002-FRJ-2000K.jpg
It can lift 2000kg. and its placed about 1/3 of the way on the H leg, that will give 2000/3=666kg lifting force ! Plenty for the savage  :D
The tubing i think will be 40*40*3, shoud also give some strenght.
The most tricky part is the mesurement of the jacks discribed cirkular movement and the allignment in the lift, but i think it could be done.
this will cost about 1000,- to make and 3000,- to buy ! or 177$ and 530$ aprox.

Try AFABonline for plans to build one like you want. We've got one of the Harbor Freight one and a Handy with side extensions for ATV's here and use them all the time. Max

Have you given any thought to a hoist instead of a lift?  If you have some sturdy overhead beams, some eye bolts and rigging would lift it to any height you are likely to need and leaves uncluttered floor space when not in use.  It would never fall off the lift either.
I have done this in the past and it works well.

Phelonius
BTW when not being used for the bike it can be used to hang other things like door knocking politicians and evangelists.

I have been thinking of that solution but went for the lift because i liked it and it will give me an excuse to weld some more :) love it, almost zen

Ill keep posting, maby ill make a post in Technical Documents/Reference with lots of pictures.

That'd be great if you'd post info on your build.. also let us know how much it cost to build so can compair vs just buying one..

Little update:
Got the materials today and started the project...
Ill just let the pictures do the talking  :D
And yes, its only spot welded... much more easy to correct a mistake down the line. When it works 100% ill complete the welding.

Little update.
I have brought the lift to a plant that galvanises metal... just because im proud of my work and want it to last longer  :DI also took my home made forward controls of the savage and god a freind to come by with his mobile sandblaster nad blasted the forward controls, darn thats my next projekt after I have finished the lift, ill make my own sandblaster. I cant see how I can live without one :)

Title: Re: Homemade lift
Post by DangMan on 08/03/10 at 12:39:01

Here is the sandblaster
http://www.powerplustools.dk/images/PPT0010Dk-t.jpg
I basicly have all the parts to make one so its a matter of time before its done.
It orks real well.

Title: Re: Homemade lift
Post by james may on 08/03/10 at 16:07:54

Nice work.  I do see one small problem that could arise and thats that you have the long end coming up and toward the jack lever so if you bend over to jack it up and aren't looking you might jack it into your head.  I'm guessing you did that for better balance on the support though.

How much was your total build cost?

Title: Re: Homemade lift
Post by DangMan on 08/03/10 at 23:11:52

I have not recieved the bill from the ppl. who galvanises the lift yet, but a guestimate would be 1800,- Dkr total for the lift, about 310,-$ In comparison I have found a lift in the shop that matches mine and it costs 5000,- Dkr The cheapest place (865,-$)

Yes I know the lift raises in a little awkward but it has to be like this.
The lift has to be mounted a little close to a wall, but when it lifts up it will pill away from the wall... and earh right into my head  ;D When I posts pictures of the finished build you will see.

Sorry JOG, I maybe shouldn't have called it a basket case, although it did come with a bucket and small box worth of "extra" pieces.  Here it is:  I'll take more pics of it as we progress.  But it would definitely be easier to work on with a lift.

Simple solution is to reverse the overhang to the other side.
Another option is to make the bed symetrical to the supports.

I can build anything too, but how do you compete w/ the MC/ATV lift at HF right now for 69 bucks ? I don't mind buildin stuff, but I'd rather "ride" if its just going to be for my health ! :o

Can't be any worse than craftsman.
They're imported from china.
and can't be repaired.

Finaly got a step further with the lift :)
Got poured the cement last week and today i removed the mold and tested if the lift would fit the hole :)
Im almost there now and looking foreward to spending a LOT of time with my new lift and bike :)
http://tornbjerg.dk/hp/savage/lift/ihul.jpg

On an other note, I got around to making the bike stand... wanted to do that for ages but....... lazy me :)
I have been wondering about why ppl mounted that darn pipe... so I tryed using a 100*100 angle bracket. Both hands on the handle bar and the right foot on the bracket.... worked realy well :) black paint and a bit of carpet on the suface that comes in contact with the frame, then its all done.
Just for info :)
