Title: New to me 95 Savage in red
Post by wallysurfr on 07/21/10 at 05:34:27

Picked the bike up yesterday for $1k.  It has 6,000 miles and is in pretty good shape.  I cleaned her up last night and most of the chrome polished right up.  The paint shines now that it has been waxed too.  I'm pretty psyched about the new 650 after riding a 2004 Honda Rebel 250 for the past 3 years!

I noticed a couple of things:

There's no trip odometer, so how do most of you guys know when you are low on fuel?

There is some pitting and some rust, I have metal cleaner and polish and evapo rust and plan on getting 'er cleaned up nice over the next week or so.  This will be an outside bike (no garage) so does anyone recommend one cover in particular?

The brake pads will prbly need to be replaced, does anyone recommend one specific brand or website to get these from?

So far, I know:
the oil is fresh
it has a brand new battery
the tires have some dry rot and will need to be replaced (taking recommendations on tires for her and places to get them online)
There is some backfiring which I see is normal
Topped the tank off with fresh fuel
Replaced both fuses under right side of seat

What else should I be looking to do to make this puppy road worthy?

The ride home yesterday was great!  A lot more torque then I'm used to and although the pipe is relatively quiet, it's still an upgrade from my 250...

I know you guys probly get a lot of these posts, new bike, what should I do?  Just want to see if there's anything else I should be looking at before I take her on the highway.  Service manual is on the way.

Buy gas every 100 miles so you don't run out,Put Sea Foam in gas tank and engine to clean them up.Pirelli 66 route tires for long lasting, great handling and smooth ride

thanks for the reply!  You mean put seafoam in the crankcase?  Will that mess with the wet clutch?  if not, assuming not, since you know what you're talking about, how much in the case and how much in the tank?

Thanks again!

First -- Welcome!  And congrats on the bike.

You will get alot of answers to your many questions.  I'll take the easy one.  No trip meter -- 100 miles is about average for a tank of gas.  I have run out (switched to reserve) at 109 miles, but I've also made it 125 on a tank.  Just depends on how full you fill it...  So I carry a 3-dial padlock like below.  Dial it to your mileage every time you fill up.  Then you can check it when you forget how many miles you've been.  Some hook them to the handlebars, clip it wherever you want....  Simple, cheap, effective!

When you buy the can of Sea Foam it tells on the can how much to use per quart for oil and gallon for gas.

Get the cover from walmart they sell covers for like 20$ you will have a hard time finding a cheaper one even online cause of shipping. And remember to not put it on until the bike is cool or the exhaust will melt it.    Lube up your throttle cable and make sure there's no binding in your controls and that all lights work properly(inspection will take care of that anyways).

Oil - 10W40 is specified. Use that, or use what I use - 5W40 Shell Rotella T6 synthetic ($20/gallon at Walmart). I've never used oil additives, and I have 28,000 no-trouble miles on my Bandit using Rotella.

Gas - use a Top Tier gas like Shell or Chevron, 87 octane. Install an in-line fuel filter.

Gas additive - Chevron Techron or Sea Foam once in a while (when you change the oil). My air-cooled engines and my Cherokee seem to like Lucas Fuel Treatment on a constant basis (improves mpg by 5-7%).

Miles-to-empty - I just installed a Sigma 1106 wired bicycle computer. Cost ~$25 and took about one hour to rig. Keeps track of trip and total distance, avg and max speed, pace, clock, etc. Very nice.

Tires - I hear Metzelers are good as are Pirellis. The IRCs that came on my bike will need replacement soon. I don't think much of them. Keep the inflation correct, 29 f/33 r for solo riding.

Fork brace - this could be the best performance improvement. I'm getting one from Tkat.

Brakes - EBC FA-106 brake pads. Came on my bike. Reported to be better than OEM.

Shop manual - buy a Clymer's. Unless you know the PO did this within the last 3,000 miles you should do a automatic decompressor/valve adjust/cylinder head bolt re-torque soon. Also within next 3,000 miles you should inspect the cam chain adjuster.

Safety checks - check every nut/bolt/screw that you can easily access, especially check torque of 1. rear axle bolt (there's no cotter pin for back-up) and 2. brake/brake lever mounting points and 3. front drive pulley bolt.

Happy riding! :)

Yea, its great.  I think Serowbot turned me on to that, so thanks to him too!  IIRC, he strapped his to his handlebar somewhere.  I have a fanny pack strapped to my backrest, so I keep it in there.

Everybody has there own method, they are correct on the 100 range, so I just plan on filling up at every even hundred miles on the odometer(5100, 5200, 5300)  I can see when it is coming up, and I know I have at least 15 miles on reserve(just don't forget to switch it back when you fill up, and NO, I won't discuss how I know that ;)), and most of my riding is not too far from some kind of fuel supply.  If I'm going long distance, I plan out the stops in advance.

Enjoy your new ride, I go a 97 7 months ago, and I love it.

Thanks for all of the friendly replies!  I will be ordering the manual so I can do the basic stuff myself.  I threw some seafoam in the tank and crankcase last night.

I noticed something on the way to work this morning.  There is a whislting/jingling type of sound coming from the block while the rpm are up.  Bike doesn't make the noise much when it's idling so I can tell exactly where it is coming from.  Any ideas?  Are these engines noisy in general or should I be concerned about this?

Also, last night when it was dark I parked the bike after about a 20 minute ride.  I noticed in the headlight, some smoke coming from near the header or the block.  I'm not sure if it was residue left on the pipe from the cleaner I was using or oil but it smelled like oil to me.  I looked around but didn't see any noticeable oil on the block.  Any areas this bike is known to develop a leak?

Keep the info coming!  Thanks guys!

was $1000 a good deal for this bike?  Or did I overpay?

OK, I've adjusted valved before so I can handle that (I think).  What's a automatic decompressor?  I assume you meant to type heaD bolt re-torque?  Is there links of how to's for this stuff?  Like a DIY section?

In the Technical Documents/Reference Section, the top thread contains links to many DIY things ...

Some of the links are broken.  And many things have been re-worked by others without the original posting being updated, so use your "Search" function too.

Clymers describes a Tune-Up as
  • cylinder head and cylinder nuts and bolt tightening
  • adjustment of automatic decompression cable prior to adjusting valves
  • valve clearance measurement and adjustment
  • spark plug cleaning/re-gapping or replacement
  • carb idle speed adjustment

The automatic decompressor partially opens the exhaust valves to help the starter motor push that big piston.

If all your 6K-miles bike needs is polishing and new tires you got a deal at 1K$.

However a 'whistling/jingling noise coming from the block at high rpm' needs investigating. Isn't normal. Whistling, vacuum leak? -- I believe the accepted method for testing for leaks is to spray that area with aerosol brake cleaner while the bike is running.  Be careful, a fire extinguisher nearby would not be a bad idea.  Jingling? -- something loose?

1000$ is a decent deal on any drivable ok condition bike.  But wouldn't pay more than 2000 for a used s40/savage..

I was reading through the DIY section... What are the symptoms of a loose CAM chain?  noisy block?  I thing doing that service is first on my list... after i adjust the valves.

A clacking is generally heard coming from around the oil filter cover when it's time to pull over.  But sometimes is chain dragging sound or just ticking.
The cam chain check in the tech section will walk you thru it.

I too went from a rebel to a savage. Last night, in fact. What a difference in power. I ended up with a 96' with 2360 miles on it for 1300. excellent condition. so far i am very pleased!!

Sweet!  Sounds like a good deal too!  The power is a nice upgrade.

So far, I've done the following:

1. polished and cleaned her up
2. replaced battery
3. cleaned air filter
4. run some seafoam in gas and crankcase
5. replaced a fuse

I've got the following planned:

1. new front brake pads
2. adjust the valves
3. check cam chain tension
4. find out why she's whistling on deceleration...

You got a good deal. You might wanna replace the tubes and rub strips in the tires if there is any doubt on their age. A tube blowout can be a hurtful thing. Congrats on you new (to you) scoot.   :D

Found out that my noises were coming from the headlight so I will break out the weather stripping this evening (If I have time) and tighten it up.

On a side note, I notice some oil on the lower right hand side of the crankcase (underneath).  Not enought to drip onto the road but it's there.  Is this common?  Would you say I need a new clutch side cover gasket?

Thread has been resurrected.

When I bought this bike the previous owner told me up front it will need new tires.  So, I got last season out of them and looked at them again yesterday and yes they are all cracked.  So, I know this is a topic of debate here but I'm wondering:

Can somone just tell me what to get?  I've read all morning about Kenda's, Pirelli's and Metzlers.  I want a balance between price and performance so I was leaning towards the Kendas.  Not sure what size I need or anything like that.  Any help is appreciated.  links?

I have stock spoke rims so I know I need tubes and strips.  If anyone can link me to the right ones that would be perfect (Maybe ebay?).  I just don't want to buy the wrong thing and have to ship it back.

Also, I've got a local guy who offered to get my new tires installed and clean my carb for $200.  Is this fair?

Here's the link from when I bought new tires for my bike:

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1252079763/

Shinko 712 tires 100/90-19 on the front and 140/90-15 on the rear (slightly oversized)

I ordered these tires through a Honda dealer on Wed, they were there on Thur. I took in my wheels Fri morning and they had them replaced before I came back at lunch. Tires, Tubes, Rim Strips, Mounting and Spin Balancing out the door price of $186 (Very good investment in my opinion)

thanks!  Yeah you can't really put a price on not falling on your face going 65... lol.

thanks for the link.  Since a guy i know is doing to work, does anyone know where to order the strips and tubes?  Do I need particular sizes?  I can source the tires.  but basically, I have to show up to his house with all the material.  He works out of his garage and not at a dealer so he doesn't have a "parts department" lol.

You can order from one of the online dealers, or, there's a Suzuki dealer on rt. 35 in Neptune. The owner is a good guy, his prices are fair and he'll be able to help with no sales pressure. It's kind of a quiet place. Maybe give them a call.

Rear
Dunlop D404 140/80-15
$70

I believe those are the stock sizes, so yes they should fit.

When you get a new tube for the rear get one with a 90o bend on the valve stem to make airing it up and checking it much easier  :)

make sure they bend it the right way . . .  away from the belt, otherwise it's almost more of a pain than no bend at all

Congrats on the new aquisition. I buy my tires from a local guy who owns a small shop and works on all brands. He always beats the internet, and that's before shipping. Check the small shops, and have the patience to wait a few days if they have to order it.
For some reason, I have a good memory for numbers. I filled up Monday, glanced at the odo it  was showing 41.something. I always round up to next five or ten and just remember it. When it gets around 14,245 I'll find a station. Sometimes I forget if I don't ride for a couple of weeks, but that's where the "Look and Shake" method comes in.

Be sure to tell them to turn the stem to the right. I told them, but they forgot at my mc shop. Owner apologized profusely and made them re-do it. Good catch EJID. Very important for right handed old men with bike leaning left on stand, plus bi-focals.   :(

So I noticed that at the end of last season I put the cover on the bike too soon (pipe still hot).  So without hesitating last night, I grabbed some fine grit sandpaper and steel wool and went at it.  Well, I should have searched the internet first because now my pipe looks awful I later learned that oven cleaner does the trick).  So, I'm in the market for a new pipe.

Would this work on my bike?  Anyone know where to source one cheaper?

I want to try to avoid rejetting.  Has anyone else done something like this?

Is there any difference between the 95 savage and the 96-04 exhaust?

Thanks!

You can do better on your own.

Wander down to the local harley shop and lie
Tell 'em you gotta a friend with a sporster and his muffler fell off over in the next town (pick one that doesn't have a harley shop) and you need a take off so he can get home.

The part number of the muffler is around here some where, this gets talked about every other week.

Typically about $20 for the muff, and $10 for the clamp.

when you get it, look down the pipe, if you can't see thru, then it has the baffle.

to make it louder, drill thru that plate.  but be careful, it can pop out.

So what exacltly does drilling a hole thru the sportster baffle do besides make it louder? I am curious b/c I just bought one on ebay for $10 and it has the baffle. I do plan to rejet. What is to be gained or lost by drilling?

Thanks.

less back pressure will make it go lean if already jetted properly.
more top end, less low end grunt.

Does anyone have a stock muffler sitting around?  If so, let me know how much.  I've been doing some digging and it seems the harley muffs require some metal work to get fitted properly.  I'm good with wood but not too good w/ metal fab.

unless you all know something that I don't.  I have a 95.
