Title: carbs bowl dry
Post by Jahoo on 07/07/10 at 09:44:40

so i pulled off my carb to try and figure out why my bike that has been sitting for a couple years wont start. the bowl is completely dry on the carb. i don't know much when it comes to bikes but wouldn't this mean there is blockage somewhere? Is there a easy way to fix this or do i have to do a complete rebuild? thanks guys.

Put a container under the fuel hose & put it on prime. Report back.

gas flows perfectly from the fuel tank so i know it's not that. do you mean a fuel line off carb.

then hook that fuel line back up,... and let the prime setting fill your float bowl back up...
The gas has evaporated... Prime setting is to refill it...
After a minute or so,... you can switch back the normal run position and start her up...

If prime won't fill the bowl,... your float needle is stuck... remove the float bowl and jiggle the floats up and down, 'till the brass needle at the opposite end of the float mechanism (points up into a hole) is freed...

awesome bowls getting gas now. I'm gonna let her fill up for a bit then try and restart her. I'll let you know if it's a success.

You may need to use a starting fluid...
Be sure to use one that includes a lubricant,... or try WD40 (it is a lubricant and contains a propellant that is propane based)...

Remove the air filter and spray a short burst in there while cranking... try two or three bursts...
... if that don't work,... you need to pull the spark plug, and squirt a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder to reestablish compression in the cylinder...

Once it starts,.. it'll probably run rough... (jets gummed up)... You can try some seafoam, or pull the jets and clean them and the passages they go in...

Engines don't like to sit...  Takes some doin' to bring them back to life... ;)...

Get a can of WD 40. Ether is way too stout for gasoline engines.
