Title: Raptor Petcock
Post by 4forths on 07/05/10 at 11:32:33

I just need to make sure the Raptor petcock that everyone seems to change to will work on my 95 Savage.  The part number is 5LP-24500-01-00, correct?  My bike only runs on prime and I am hoping this will fix the problem.  Thanks.

Did mine ages ago and have never regretted it. I took one of these
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9562/615j7nswjwlsl500aa280.jpg
and attached one end of a lanyard to the petcock, the other end to one side of the keychain.  The other side of the keychain holds my MC keys. When I shut down the engine, I remove the keys and let them fall. They hang straight down from the petcock to remind me to turn the valve off before I take my keys and dismount.

i'm in the habit of hitting the kill switch as i pull in to park and as i coast in i turn the fuel off. although i left it on last night so starting took a minute this morning.
when i do flood the engine like that, am i getting gas in the oil and causing problems?

If leaving the valve on caused any kind of a starting or flooding problem, you have a leaking carb, and you had better get it fixed,.....now !

Just put a 'raptor' on my '01 about 1/2 an hour ago. Since I was pretty low on fuel, I just leaned it over on the right side with an old tire under it. Took about 2 minutes to remove the old vacuum one & bolt up the new one. Hooked up the fuel line & plugged the vacuum hose with a bolt for now. About 5 minutes for everything.

Works great, now I don't have to run on prime to keep from leaning out under load. 8-)

The Raptor goes on easy and works great,...  if you get an in-line petcock, you will have no reserve...

so then what kind of problems would be caused by leaving the switch on? i was under the impression that it would flood the engine if left on for extended periods? why else would someone need to attach a lanyard to it?

If my pet-thingy went bad I would replace it with the one that came on it,But I've never had one go bad,but then again the Pope looks after me. :)

Problems with flooding occur when your float valve in the carb sticks or when you got leaking floats. Those are your last lines of defense against unmetered and continuous flow out of your airbox and/or down the cylinder walls and into the crankcase. Best bet is to always turn off the raptor petcock. That being said...I never do. THAT being said...i'll be MIGHTY PO'd when/if I ever have a stuck float valve.

Post by RTC on 07/12/10 at 20:50:58

ok so something very ironic just happened...as i was typing on here about turning my petcock off and flooding and stuff, i went out to get something from my storage closet and smelled gas. sure enough i left my fuel on and it is leaking out of the hose that comes out of the airbox so.......i guess you were right and my carb is jacked up.....arghhh!

what is my next step here? pull the carb and look at what?

You could just rap the side of the float bowl a few times with a screwdriver handle, but for a permanent fix, you'll most likely need to pull to carb and change out the needle valve and its seat.

Good luck!

Post by Routy on 07/12/10 at 22:30:25

You probably have all the answers above, but.......
it is best and safest to turn a Raptor (normal) petcock off after each ride,.....same as the stock vacuum valve does automatically, but you shouldn't have to ! If you do have to turn it off to keep from flooding, you really need to get it fixed, which means cleaning or replacing the needle and seat in the carb.

needle and seat ok got it. so the actual float itslef could be fine?

Needle and seat is an old term for needle valve assembly. It consists of 2 parts (needle & seat) that actually seal the fuel from flowing. It may also contain washers and possibly a clip that pulls the needle down as the float lowers.
I myself have not been into this part of the carb, so don't quote me for every word ;)

The needle and seat are sold as a pair #19. There's also an o-ring #21 and a little screen that also clips on the seat #20. You need at least the needle and seat. May be able to use the O-ring and screen off your old one. To be sure I'd get the o-ring also though.

Here's a couple kits on ebay that'll have what you need for a little less.

The second one has everything you need and it's a little cheaper. The first one has got some extra stuff you might need down the road someday as well as a new screen.

Well... I'll give you a quick explanation of how the needle and seat works. Not sure if there are other threads that explain everything.

The gas flows from the petcock to the passageway directly to the top side of the seat. When the carb is empty the float is down pulling the needle with it opening the passageway for a freeflow of gas into the bowl. As the bowl fills with gas the float rises closing the seat off slowly untill it reaches the top closing the gas off completely. As you run the bike it uses gas out of the bowl and the float drops opening the needle and seat and letting more fuel in as needed.

There you go.  Thats about the most basic explanation as I could think of. Hope that helps.

You might try emailing them and see if they'd throw a couple larger jets in with it. Looks like they sell a lot of carb kits. Might be worth a try. They might possibly take out the smaller ones and repalce them with the jets of your choice. Won't hurt to try. Good luck

So my one question about the raptor is do you have to take it off when removing the gas tank?

Title: Re: Raptor Petcock
Post by Serowbot on 07/13/10 at 17:26:21

it stays on the tank,... and makes the tank much easier to remove than the stock petcock...

oh i gotta get one

Title: Re: Raptor Petcock
Post by texsam on 07/13/10 at 17:36:41

beside blocking the vaccum ine on the carb do i need to do anything, is it the same fuel flow as the stock?

Title: Re: Raptor Petcock
Post by RTC on 07/13/10 at 18:42:07

it's a direct fit in the factory mounting location and there's just one line that taked the fule to your carb. simple as it gets. plug the vacuum on the other side of your carb. i put a screw in the vacuum hole and then filled a little piece of hose with black rtv and squished it over the nipple.
