Title: My bike just stopped
Post by kk lewi on 07/04/10 at 13:02:32

I cranked my bike today as it had been a week or so since I rode it.  I let it sit there to get all the juices flowing and after about 15 minutes it just stopped.  I thought, huh, that's odd.  Went and cranked it again and it started briefly, then cut out.  Now it won't start at all.

My first guess is something screwy with the carb as it has plenty of fuel.  Is this where I should start?  It only has 3k miles on it so I'm a bit perplexed.   :-/

Generally,.. I'd say, don't just let an air-cooled bike just sit there and idle for 15min...
3 or 4 min. max... it needs airflow...
You may have overheated it...
Have you left it long enough to cool off?...

... if so,... check for fuel, spark, and compression...
If they're okay,... pull the plug and clean it...

wow  You are like a wizard!!  I had let it sit until I read your post.  She cranked right up.  I learned something today.  :)  Thank you my friend.

I fear may have screwed something up :(  Was driving it to work today.  It was acting a little funny but I kept going as I just thought maybe the carb wasn't full of fuel.  It cut off on me after about 3 miles.  No starting it after that.  Walked home and got my car and headed to work.  Came back this evening and it fired right up.  I hightailed it back home.

I guess tomorrow I'll drive it back and forth in front of my house to see if it's overheating on simple rides now...

did you try in prime?

If it cuts out in prime, then it's not the petcock,
if it is, replace the vac line

go with verslagen, check the petcock by running in prime.

maybe see if running with choke helps too.

i was checking valves the other day and the bike died after i finished, i was rather upset i screwed up the valves. turns out i forgot to reconnect the vaccuum line. bike got me a solid mile or so before she gave up and died.

i'm no savage wiz like a bunch of guys on the site, but i think overheating is pretty rare, unless you don't belive in oil or something.

yeah I tried prime first thing then I tried the choke.  Nothing, not until it cooled down.  I haven't had a chance to try anymore short rides yet.

I thought that maybe too bill.  Then, I figured no way 15w-40 could have broken down that fast.  I'll try it.  Can't hurt!

When you try it on Prime,... remove the vac line completely, and block the taps at the back of the petcock and on the carb...

Just turning to prime will only work if the vac line is leaking,... not if the petcock diaphragm is leaking gas...

I think you can rule out the carb as being the problem, except for it running empty. But if it still does it on "prime", you just may have a spark firing problem, which could come from a poor wire connection etc etc.
You must somehow determine if the carb is still full of fuel when it stops. Do they have a drain plug,....I don't know.

If it stops......like you turned off the key, it may not be fuel related.

Changed the oil today.

Took her for a short ride of about 6 miles (2x the amount when she died the other day).   Purred like a kitten the whole way.  I rode slow, I rode fast, purred.

I haven't taken her on a decent/long ride yet.  Change of oil fixed?  I'm not convinced, but it's hard to argue with the results...

Synthetic is deff my next oil.
