Title: Amazing Original Photographs from the Civil War
Post by Starlifter on 06/28/10 at 21:11:49

Whether you like history or not... These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 145 years ago: A compendium of photos from the Civil War era. Truly fortunate that so many of these have survived. Probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate. Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass. Many used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear.

Great pics for any history buff to appreciate.

Very interesting error message from that server!

And add "Glory" to you Civil War film list -- but don't see it the way I did!

(I saw it on TV with an ice pack around my knee, having just crushed my fibula with my tibia skiing.)

Did you know that their were 3 times the Union soldiers killed than Confederates,Why because the Union out numbered the Confederates 3-1.

Thanks for the photos -- I've been reading Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin (about Lincoln and his cabinet), so they were very appropriate.

It was interesting reading about Lincoln's problems with McClellan while Obama was giving McChrystal his walking papers.

it is also because on the average, The confederate soldier was a better marksman, having a greater likelyhood of been raised in a rural area growing up hunting, as opposed to the more urban north.
I believe that the war between the states was also the last major war in the world in which the small arms, meaning rifle, pistol and bayonette, caused more casualties than artillery.
In WW1 he lopsided percentage was about 75% in favor of artillery.
In WW2 it was about 90% artillery and bombing.
Does anyone know what the percentages are today?
Small arms versus artillery, bombs, predators, mines and explosive devices?
Just curious about how we kill each other nowdays.

Phelonius
BTW in the nineteenth century and before, desease killed more soldiers than all the machinations of man.
I guess basically it says the war is unsafe for human life, and others.
