Title: Old Thumper Ale
Post by skatnbnc on 06/28/10 at 17:20:12

Wll I finally got to try the Thumper this weekend at the Under the Redcoat event at Colonial Williamsburg. It was a welcome refresher with the temp at 107 degrees that day.

After we took the photo I put it into a period correct mug, and it was after public visiting hours - this was NOT how we portray the 18th century to the public!

Since we got home from the coast, about all Ive worn is shorts & sandals. No way could I do a full suit of clothes in 107 degrees any more. I hope the oil doesnt wreck it down there any worse than iy has.

So how did you like an Old Thumper, a good Extra Special Ale, compared with the water washed crap such as a normal American Lager?

While rare, green glass, and used corks, the bottle of beer IS correct period.

Yes, I think Ringwood needs to sponsor us!

In that photo I am wearing, from the skin out: cotton stockings, garters, leather shoes, a linen shift (like a nightgown), a linen under-petticoat (undergarment), stays (18th century corset, fully boned), a linen petticoat (skirt), a pocket (it ties on around the waist), a linen fichu (neck kerchief), a linen full length gown, a linen apron, a linen cap and a silk bonnet.

And no, I am not as hot as the tourists in shorts and a t-shirt. The linen absorbs the perspiration, then slowly evaporates it. The longer sleeves, fichu, cap and stockings keep the sun and bugs off me.
We are actually better protected than the visitors.

All that being said - it was still hot as Hades that weekend, and we were all soaking wet.  I only had one beer - the rest of the drinking was lots of water.

Yep. More clothes doesnt mean hotter. When I was roughnecking in West Tx, I wore a long sleeve over a tee shirt & painters pants, white, loose floppy( No, they dont stay white more than a minute, but theyre still looser than blue jeans), wet the tee shirt & button the shirt part way & instand evap cooler.. the other guys thot I was crazy, like the people here,,
