Title: first long trip
Post by suzukirider on 06/27/10 at 09:55:10

Just returned from 700 mile over night trip with my bike.  I was really happy with it but it seems not everyone thinks of an S40 as a "real" bike.  Anyone had that problem?  It keeps good speed, the seat is very comfortable for me, good gas mileage - about 70 and overall I felt very comfortable on it.

So what is it?  A moped?

Do you have a ego problem or do they?

Certainly not a problem with the bike.

Tell 'em it's the sports car of the cruiser world, light and fast.

Of course we're gonna have to do something about that 70 mpg, that's so moped.  And the mouse fart muff, to have a real bike you got to wake the dead.

If you're happy with it I'd stuff whatever anyone else has to say about it! 8-)

I have a hard time using raw numbers of people saying something is good or bad or right or wrong to lean on & say that since all those people agree w/ me, I must therefore be right. Once upon a time, everyone KNEW the Earth was the center of everything & they were all wrong. Then, theres the hundreds of millions of flies out there, eating away on cow patties. They cant all be wrong, can they? Should I join in? ( J/K, thats gross!)
Anyway, if you believe in it & youre happy w/ it, then by all means, have fun widditt! & even if there is not one person who agrees, it dont matter, cuz this is your life & when its over, YOU are the one checking out, not them, so live yours while it is is yours, cuz when its your turn to die, no one else will do That for ya, so we cant let others live our lives for us.

I've had similar comments recently about my S40 (being too small, not a REAL bike, wimpy, etc)  but I think the people saying it are just UNeducated about how great the S40 really is. Their loss.

As a competitive revolver shooter I get similar grief and comments from those speedy pistol shooters with fancy tricked out parts  - I'm not shooting what they think is the best gun for racing. TOOO BAD! I'm having fun with a big grin on my face and usually my score is more accurate with a sixgun than their go fast peashooter. There aren't as many revolver shooters at a match, but we're having the most fun.

Just my 2cts. Congratulations on the long ride!!  8-)

Title: not a real bike, LOL
Post by Stimpy on 06/27/10 at 11:41:46

;D ;D ;D

So what, if it doesn't leave a puddle or break the bank is not "real" bike? :-? ...allrighty then.

- Brando rode a 1950 Triumph Thunderbird 6T, it was a 500cc bored to 650cc.

- Che Gevara's famous p.o.s. bike was a late 1930's 500cc Norton model 18.

- A well tuned LS650 will do 100mph and outmaneuver pretty much any non-racetrack bike.

- And to this day both the BMW F650 and the Kawasaki KLR 650 are still the gold standard.

* In 1986 the LS650 was simply revolutionary and a lot of time,
resources and thought went into that classic design and there is
a reason why it has stayed unchanged for 25 years; bigger is not
better, just costs more.

Besides, not a real bike for what?  Autobahn racing?

can't sleep well if they don"t complain and criticize all day long  ::)

Look @ those skid marks he laid down just before that really ugly high side get off started. That guy is a split second from some serious punishment.

Expensive advertising can get someone that believes the hype to buy an expensive MC.

I've been riding 20 years and my 05 S40 is one of the best bikes I've owned. I like it better than my 72 Bonneville.

I was at a bike rally a couple of weeks ago and I saw this T-Shirt:

What happened to all the motorcycles; this has turned into an effin fashion show!!!

Many people have asked if mine is a Harley. Apparently it was styled to look somewhat like one. Mines an old '87.  I must admit, I wish it was a little bigger. I'm 6'1" and 250 lbs. The bike only has 16,000 miles on it, but it's been through some rough times.  I had the clutch replaced and the idiots messed the whole thing up. I had to have the head replaced (they got a used one somewhere) and the bike has never been the same. Runs like an old beater, but it still runs. I have definately lost some power, but it's still fun to ride. I really wish they had put a 5th gear on the older ones. I get going about 50-60 and it's winding out pretty good. I don't know how you guys get up to 100. Mine would explode if I went that fast. Not to mention that nagging vibration.
If I ever win the lottery.....

Funny you mention that.  When I was getting ready to leave work this morning, one of my co-workers was checking out my C50, and asked if it was a Harley.  The Boulevard badge is right on the tank in front of him! ;D  In his defence, I don't think he's much of a "bike guy". ::)  Oh well, nobody's perfect! :D

My aunt & uncle had a H-D dresser until about 3 years ago. My aunt
calls my V-Star 950T a Yamaharley. When I corrected her, then she said it looked better than most Harleys. 8-)

She's my favorite aunt. ;D ;D

I used to spin a little story about my de-badged Savage being a prototype for a company that was going to bring back the Indian name. I think people wanted to believe that & were disappointed when I revealed the truth. If they acted like a jerk I let 'em believe it. 8-)

Hey drums,

- yup, the savage is kinda on the low side
but a lot of tall ppl do a seat and/or peg
extension mod to fix this, I personally sit
on the passenger seat of my little yamaha.

- 16k miles? that bike still has a lot of miles left in it,
and if it goes up to 60mph there is nothing really
wrong with it (try re-adjusting your valves), next
time you need a new rear tire get a taller one, that
should give you a few more mph, and you should
regularly check/replace your general wiring in any
"old" bike to save yourself trouble down the road.

*Here you can get cheap savage parts online:
http://stores.ebay.com/PinWall-Cycle-Parts-Inc_Suzuki-GZ250-Savage_W0QQ_fsubZ8039785QQ_sidZ12458664QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322

- The "new" 5gear box is NOT better than the 4gear, just shorter
gears but top end is pretty much the same, we all still wish it had
a 6th gear. And to get it up to 100mph you usually need a carb-kit
and a chain-conversion kit; my old savage with a larger main jet
and 140/90 oversize rear wheel went 90mph but not a mile more.

P.S. Since winters here are just as bad as in Wisconsin,
I had to buy a car so I'm stuck right now with a 125cc
and I would seriously kill for any old savage, oh well  :D

Bigger is better, haven't you heard?

There's so many people out there w/ the rediculious notion that anything less than 1200cc is a practically a scooter. What those "sheeple" are too ignorant to realize is that their 1800+cc's of "Real Mans Bike" comes w/ 200+lbs of unnecissary lard. That is why bikes like the Savage get little respect. Never mind the fact that it'll leave those overweight pigs in the dust when the road starts curving or that with a few simple mods it'll run right there w/ bikes w/ 2x the displacement.

The whole "cruiser crowd" mentality annoys the crap out of me. I'm at the point where I'm ready to switch from my sportbike to something more comfortable but I'm NOT ready to settle for a morbidly obese bike w/ a monster sized motor that puts out a pitiful 60hp. Although the savage isn't my "ideal bike" (it is my wifes "ideal bike" though). I do appreciate it's lightweight nimble chassis and ample power. I think w/ some mods (and a few parts from Lancer) I could definately make a Savage into something very close to what I'm looking for.

Sorry for the rant session. Congrats on the ride. I took a road trip last year on my GSXR (1200mi in 3 days) and it is still one of the best experiances of my life. There is NOTHING like hitting the open road on a bike. Enjoy the ride and don't let anyone bring you down because they fail to understand the appeal of the Savage.

Hey everyone! Long time!

Great job on the trip!
All the reasons you said are the same reasons I love the bike!
Fits me to a tee! Really fun "Mountain hopper" Carried me and my gear with no complaints.

True, 25 years ago the 650cc was the "big" bike.

Check out my 12,000 mile trip below!

Hey duck! long time no see, how've you been?
How are things looking down in Florida with this whole oil mess?

Don't be a stranger in the forum now, wish you well, L8r.

Yup! Long time. Sorry.
Still riding like crazy.
Gonna be in the U.P. Michigan in a few weeks working, but will have my bike with me!! (Trucking it up there) And maybe have a side trip to

The oil is going to be a big problem for years. I'm in Sarasota/Tampa Bay area so we are not seeing it on our beaches yet. The current is keeping it away but unfortunately heading toward Key West.
Interesting thing is fish are showing up closer to shore that typically stay out offshore. And many fish are sticking around longer than their normal season. I'll be in Panama City Beach in Sept. so I'll get a good look at it.
It's terrible.
