Title: Fork Seals
Post by 23Skidoo on 06/13/10 at 06:49:43

I've read the tutorials here a few times as my seals are gone and leaking all over the place, makes stopping a tad dangerous. Do you think someone i.e. me with the mechanical knowledge of a muppet will be able to do it my self? What can I really break? I'd welcome your thoughts.

Thanks AJ

The upper seals are often a piece of cake. Drop the forks out of the triple trees. Drain them over a catch basin over night by hanging them upside down. Pry out the rubber ring, remove the rusty wire retainer, cycle the forks a couple times and they may pop out. If they don't, pry with a mechanic's pick or butter knife. Lube inside of new seal, slide in place, install new retainers, put rubber ring back on.

If they are like mine and won't come out for love or money, top off and wipe off. Or have a shop do a full teardown and cleaning.

Thanks for your support WD Buddy. I've read the tutorials over and over but don't think I'm up to the job. So this time I'm gonna' have to pay.. but I really must learn how to do these things myself..

Cheers for the input tho'

Regards AJ

I've done it once, it's not hard.
Well at least if you're lucky and get the allen bolt loose on the bottom.
I've posted the size of a nut that will help hold the damper while you unscrew the bolt.  But a broomstick with the right taper will do the job.
Some say use a impact wrench and it'll come right out.
