Title: RPM / MPH Relationship
Post by ret cg on 06/11/10 at 19:33:17

S40 riders with tachs-- what RPM are you turning while doing 60MPH?This assumes stock rear tire. Thanks.

Mine does about 4,100 rpm at 60 mph

As a matter of interest, yesterday May 22, 2010, I took my box stock '07 S40 out with the idea of seeing whether I could hit a rev limiter. Note that I have no tach on the bike. After riding it for plenty long enough to be sure it was warm, I put it in second and wound it up till it would go no faster. There was no sound of break-up as one would expect from an on-off rev limiter. It topped at 60 mph, which if Suzuki's table on Page 4-2 of the Owner's Manual is correct, corresponds to 7150 rpm (slide-rule accuracy). I repeated the run using first gear, but quite frankly I am unsure of my own measurements, since I didn't write them down immediately. I think I remember seeing 47 mph in first, which would be about 8700 rpm and which I do not believe. If on the other hand I saw 37 mph the rpm would have been just under 7000. I would expect the rpm in 1st to be higher because there is less aerodynamic drag at the lower speed, but not that much higher. It is easy to misread a speedometer, and I may well have done so.

If anyone cares, I was using 87 octane fuel (with Sta-Bil) from last fall when I put the bike away for the winter. Shell Rotella 15W-40 oil. Bike has about 6200 miles. Temperature about 70 degrees, altitude about 1800 feet.

Suzuki gives the following speeds at 6500 rpm. 1st, 35 mph. 2nd, 55 mph. 3rd, 75 mph. 4th, 90 mph. 5th, 100 mph. There is some rounding, as both the Metric and English speeds are given to the nearest 5, and the Metric and English speeds as given are not exactly equivalent. Because of that rounding my rpm calculations are necessarily inexact.

Okay, people. Since I seem to have a reputation for questioning the methodology of others, here's your chance to question mine.

slightly higher top gear 60mph rpm

Not sure if that's clear.....
I'm thinking it's something like...
with a 5speed bike.... 3850 rpm at 60 mph
with the 4 speed bike... 3950 rpm at 60mph...

hope that helps...

(is that right Rigid?)...

My stock 1998 Savage shifts up at around 3400-3800 rpm. You can feel the torque peak through the first 3 gears. I get a little more rpm before 4th and hit that at 3400-4000 rpm. 5th gear I can feel it after I hit 50 mph and around 3400-3800 rpm, depending on what sort of road I'm on and if I'm going up or down a hill.

My speeds and shifting are around
1st gear 0-15mph (3000 rpm)
2nd gear 15-25 mph (3400 rpm)
3rd gear 25-40 mph (3400 rpm)
4th gear 40-50/55 mph (3400-4000 rpm)
5th 50+mph (3400-4000 rpm)
After 65mph (4200 rpm)

heres another related question  how much throttle do you use to hold these speeds?

On flat ground you should be able to maintain a stable road speed with correspodning rpms.

Years ago, before I went to chain, I put a tape around the circumference of the rear tire and read the ratios in the shop manual. I do not remember the exact numbers but they were very close to what Verslagen posted above.  After going to a Michelin darkside and a chain and sprocket set up, at 60 mph I was about 100 rpm higher.
All this with a sidecar attached.

For 5th gear, about 60-65, 1/8 throttle or so is typical.

Just to be clear about my quoted post above:

Those are when I feel the power start give so I switch up a gear.
I know there is more and can push that up by about 5 miles an hour in 1st and 2nd. I can push it about 10 mile more in 3rd and 4th.
My suzi whines at about 55 or so in 4th  so that's about max I feel comfortable in 4th and rpm are around 4000-4200.
In 5th I've had rpm at 5100 holding at 83mph.
Haven't had her over that, but know she had more power to give, although my nerves did not.

I did read on here when I fist joined last year after getting my ride that max tourq per gear is had when shifting at around 3400 rpms

I shift a lot quicker than that,By 35-40 I'm' in high gear.

looks like I'm in the higher gear at about 2500 rpm,Thats when it starts making good torque.
