Title: Difficulty opening oil filter compartment Post by Aggie10 on 06/09/10 at 11:09:56 Maybe it's my newbness but I can't get the oil filter case open. The bolts on it are extremely tight and it feels as if i'll break the allen key when i try to unscrew it. Any advice? |

Title: Re: Difficulty opening oil filter compartment Post by BurnPgh on 06/09/10 at 11:59:55 You could put the allen key in and tap the long end of it lightly with a hammer. 's what I do with all my stuck bolts. |

A light tapping to drive the allen wrench to loosen it is handy. Dont smack it hard. You can use a very l;ight oil/penetrating oil, then give the screws a quick, light smack or 2, driving the allen bolts in like a nail. I didnt say use a nail..Take your time, wrecked bolt heads or busted bolts takes a lot longer than being careful. |
Title: Re: Difficulty opening oil filter compartment Post by ero4444 on 06/09/10 at 14:02:02 yes indeed take care now! Avoid the broken bolt. 1. heat the piece, avoid heating the bolt if you can. Propane torch is cheap. But isn't this aluminum? I don't know how much heat is too much for aluminum so I would go easy on it, maybe it's not a problem. 2. if it doesn't come right out cold OR hot, then try a very small amount of TIGHTEN, then some LOOSEN. 2a. tapping is good. Don't just keep torquing. If aluminum then it's pretty soft so I wouldn't tap hard or pull long. 3. focus on not breaking the bolt. Broken allen key is not the problem. I hope to remember this before I break another bolt. |
Title: Re: Difficulty opening oil filter compartment Post by buttgoat1 on 06/10/10 at 09:16:52 I have used the impact driver if I have the right combination of sockets and adaptors. I think it has a 3/8" rachet drive, adapter down to 1/4" and a 5/16" socket with a allen wrench tip I also find that tightening bolts sometimes helps break them loose |
Title: Re: Difficulty opening oil filter compartment Post by jef.savage on 06/10/10 at 15:46:29 I bought a set of 3/8 drives allen bit's for my ratchet that work much better than the L shaped wrenches and will fit my impact driver as well. |
