Title: Disable headlight while starting?
Post by DaveLKN on 06/08/10 at 21:00:55

Anybody know of any mods that can be done to the Savage that will shut off the lights when the starter is engaged to improve starter performance?

Sure would be a nice modification if it could be done easily.  It would help prolong battery life as well.

Ideas?  Possibilities?

shouldn't be very hard to do using s-40 parts, because the s-40 does that already,....I think.

easy enough to do if u have a wiring diagram.  Just connect power to lights through a normally closed relay.  Then splice power from push Start to relay solenoid and there ya go.  The power to lights will be cut while pushing start button.   I dunno how much this will help starter performance or battery life, but that's how I'd do it.  Also make sure not to cut power to any ignition components or bike won't start.

There's a headlight delay mod here some where.

I just wondered if someone had done this already- I had searched high/low for something along these lines that could be done without whacking up the wiring harness.   I don't know why I thought this would be a hot mod- I was working with a marginal battery this evening trying to decide if the 'new2me' Savage needs a new one, and noticed that it would probably have fired if not for having to juice all that illumination while spinning the starter and energizing the spark all at the same time.  Oh well, if it ain't broke- I'll try and fix it.

Thanks Verslagen- I'll search along those lines.

Further, anybody??

Amongst all other stuff, that is one thing I am doing. As james may said above - a automotive relay with normally closed contacts will do the trick. I found one which I believe runs fog lights.

I just close my eyes & pretend its off. Somehow, thers this nagging feeling that its not true, but as long as I dont look & prove its on, then I can feel better. I know that sounds odd, but thats the very philosophy the dumb masses use to hide from the things happening in the world. Most still have no idea how bad the fed reserve is, or how nafta went thru 7 what its done. People stupid enough to have supported nafta when it was happening should never vote again.. seriously,

How about using the kickstand switch to operate a relay so if the stand is down the headlight won't come on, stand up closes relay & turns headlight on.  8-)

That's a pretty darn good idea!

Anybody got a wiring diagram for the headlight cutout?

I think a fog light relay will use normally open contacts., closing when switch is on.

The simplest way is to tap the starter button to the starter relay.
This tap will activate a new relay to cut the ground of the headlight.

push the starter button the starter goes and the headlight is cut.

However, I still like the idea of having the headlight cut when the kickstand is down.  To do this, I'll have to try out a couple ideas.  Concerned that taking advantage of the sidestand switch may interfere with it original purpose.

Yeah, but when you turn high beam, it kills the fog lights. I think that's what it was for, not sure.

IIRC, kickstand down provides a ground. That should be an easy thing to tap off & use. Add a ground to a normally Hot relay & instant energize,, as long as its a normally close set of contacts, then theyll open. Well,, Im clearly wrong somewhere, cuz that just sounds WAY too easy.

I believe the neutral switch and the kickstand switch both operate the existing side stand relay.A pair of diodes are being used to isolate both switches and the neutral light from each other. If that's the case, you would probably have to isolate the add-in lighting relay with a diode as well.If you just tap into the existing circuit,it looks as if the neutral switch would also operate the add-in relay. So,no headlight in neutral!
This is all based on a wiring diagram for a '96,BTW.

Not a bad idea, but the little time I spend idling on the sidestand, it could be very low on my very short list of priorities,...... highest still being a 5th gear light :-/

I don't spend much time on the kick stand either.
But that moment, immediately after turning the key and pushing the button, headlight draining away those blasted electrons...

If you use the kickstand then you can only start with the lights off with the kick stand down and not up... this also means you can only start in neutral with the lights off..

Just splice in a high amp toggle switch with built in breaker. Brit bikes and metrics had them for decades, used for off/low/high. A 20 amp unit is sufficient on my pickup, Savage pushes less current than a 30 amp Chrysler system...

What can I say, I am a cheap skate.

Worked out a little circuit...
http://verslagen.savageriders.com/Circuits/headlight starter cutout.jpg
You tap the power from the starter button to pole 2 of the relay.
Then cut the ground wire for the headlight then run the headlight side to pole 1.
Pole 3 and 5 would be tied to ground.

If I read it right the relay only needs 80 ma to energize.
I might have to put a current limiter resister in there.
