Title: Your thoughts on these two tanks
Post by Scott_H on 06/07/10 at 13:36:29

Just going for size/look.  I know they both need to be cleaned up and smoothed out.

Stock tank is a better fit.

If you have a bike graveyard in the area, try Puch, CZ, Jawa, Husqvarna. Some of the alloy versions almost fit. Some older Honda ATC tanks actually fit, IF you are willing to drill your frame to mount them.

The short square frame backbone really limits your tank options. Sportster tanks are too long to clear the under seat rail widening. Ditto Truimph, BSA, Norton, Matchless, FatBobs, Dyna style one piece Big Twin, Yamaha XS650, etc.

I run an OLD steel dirt track tank, takes a BSA cap and Honda fuel valve. Had to cut off the stock tank mounting lugs from the frame, drill out the neck gusset holes behind the data plate sticker, and through bolt the front tabs with an 84-99 Softail lower tank "bolt".

Wish I knew where my wife has the pics stashed in her "confuser"...

I like #2 better. I just like the stock tank. What muffler is this? I like it. Is it loud?

I like the Savage tank.  I think it's one of the bike's strong stying points.

Well, who knew?

I was really liking the little one.  It is just "perched" on the stock mounts in the pic but I would cut them off if I used it and lower it down a bit.   I wasn't really liking the "fat" stock tank on the small bike.

Guess I will re-think.

Thanks for your opinions.

Sorry I missed your question,

It's a $20 glass pak I got on eBay.  Just had it welded on and they put it on 180* wrong (bracket is on the outside, not the inside)

As you can see from the pics, my bike is in lots of pieces right now and is not running so I don't have any idea how it sounds.

I'm pretty sure it is the same one that is in this post:

I think the smaller tank would look decent if it were down more. My tank sits up higher than the stock one and I love it. I can get to everything, even the spark plug with out having to pull the tank off.

Hey dude, you got any pictures of your bike?  I would really like to check it out!

No updated pics right now.  Basically it looks like the above pic with the black tank.  It has new tires & brakes and I have put the handlebar controls back on.  Still working on the wiring and getting the seat mounted.

Did you use a impact screw driver to get the handlebar controls off?  I have been trying to adjust mine but the bolt where the allen head is has been givin me hell.  Any Suggestions?

My bike is old and very crusty.  It looks to have been dropped on both sides numerous times by the previous owner.  I have had to use penetrating oil and an impact screwdriver/wrench on almost every fastener I have encountered.  A lot of then have stripped and I have had to have couple machined out.  Not fun!

Not even close to being remotely done.
Don't mind the bag, I put that on for long hauls. She is dirty, was a 340ish mile trip that day. 1975 Sporty Tank.

Even though I already voted for the stock tank I've changed my mind.  I like the orange tank.  And I like it just as it is, kinda beat up and orange.

Problem with the orange tank is the HUGE dent in the opposite side.  I'm going to see if I can get it fixed.  So, I'm sticking with the stock tank just for a little while.

I really like the Sporty tanks but I was trying to think of something a little different.

I hear ya.When I did mine there weren't any/very many. But with the backbone on the Savage you're pretty much limited.I'm eventually going to redo the backbone on one of mine.I have the same tank Lancer has on his bike.Wasn't trying to copy his.I bought the tank for another build but sold it.I also have an old coffin tank, but it's a little long for the stock frame.

Yup that's about the only reason I went with it because I knew it would seat how I wanted with the least amount of effort. Not to mention it was on sale. I cut out the stock cap bung and put in an Aircraft style cap though because I went to school for Aviation and worked for an FBO so it was to remind me of those days.

I graduated school for aviation about a year ago,and no luck finding work.

Hence why I said WORKED lol.. I got out of that JOKE of a career. Stupid towel heads ruined my life so thanks for that. I work in Engineering now, so I guess it isn't all bad. I wasn't about to keep moving around chasing a job market that just keep getting worse.

Played with trying to figure out how to mount the orange tank last night.  Its a "no go".  Guess I might need to stick with a sporty tank after all.

Could add tabs to the frame and tank.

True, but I'm not a welder and I really want to get this thing finished and on the road.

The old tank, just like it is. In fact, I'm thinking about old '60s chrome sided tanks that are pointy in front and fatter in the back.

Ralfy and others, FYI. I've had people tell me the Cherry Bomb we grew up with is no longer available. It is available From Maremont who bought the company. They are cheap and a couple come in 1 3/4" inlet. Of course, I doubt they come in chrome. Google "Maremont" and keep clicking on the red muffs. Some on here have glasspacks painted different colors. IHTH

Ive seen dent fixin stuff for rent at the rental places. PLayin with GAS tanks requires some serious prep work. GAS makes loud noises & hurts peolpe if not dealt with right.
