considering a Savage with almost 10k miles on it. Someone told me to check for timing chain tensioner - can the problem start that early? Thanks!

open muffler and intake put more strain on all the engine parts.

Yan, 10k?   Nah, your engine and camchain are new.
The only exception would be chronic overheating or such as.

But if you want to be sure about it buy the right side engine
seal and when you do an oil change remove the exhaust and
the pegs, open the case and take a look at the adjuster.

good luck!

Stock or not, typically with normal care, you'll get 20,000 miles before you need to look at your cam chain.  Poor oil and oil maintenance is likely to cause accelerated wear.  One fellow here swears by 50wt oil and had 30,000+ miles before cam chain maintenence was required.  Another went 50,000.  Some as little as 6 or 8,000.  If you don't take a look using the aforementioned check, you'll need to teach your ankles to listen for an odd rapping that occurs just above the oil filter cover.  There are a couple of reasons to sell a bike, one you've outgrown it/lost interest or two you're about to throw lots of money to it.  We warn newb's of this cause we want you here for a long time.  Once you check it, you'll know how well the bike was taken care'd of too.

10K miles? So it is almost broken in huh?

I've been abusing my bike since the first week of February 1998. It's been: dropped, fell over, slid into a curb at 35 mph on its side, hit a tree head on (wet grass), wheelied, run with zero oil in July in Mississippi for an hour, hit 115 mph in summer in Memphis (HOT), paraded, drag raced, toured with, commuted on, left outside all year, hit by Honda Goldwings (TWICE), modified to within an inch of the wrong side of sanity...

Still can't kill it. I've tried. These are good bikes.

That's what the tower said at the end of the 2 mile run in. No fenders or muffler, laying over the tank with the stock bars folded over. Old air field that was used for test and tune weekends.

Even with the apes and full fender she'll break the ton. Takes awhile, but she'll do it. Just.

With a supertrapp and an edelbrock she'll do 97 uphill, no other performance mod's.
supertrapp and stockcarb, she'll do 85 the same hill, going up, not down.
