Title: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Tiefighterpilot on 06/05/10 at 09:15:22

I am about to change my oil and thought I would ask...

What oil do you use (Brand and Grade)?
How often do you change?
Your opinion on the oil?

I guess a synthetic diesel oil like Rotella would be "other" on this survey

Whatever is handy when it needs topped off. Mine thinks it is a Matchless, has all the old standard Brit bike leaks.

At change it depends on the season, 15W40 in the late fall through early spring, 20W50 late spring through early fall.

Synthetic oil + my Savage = really bad idea, it usually boils out full synthetic within an hour or two.

I have a bottle of Mobil 20W50 air-cooled V-twin approved oil for top off right now. Semi-synthetic, on sale at O'Reilly auto parts for less than dino juice. Most bike oils now were engineered for liquid cooled engines...

Just to check... Rotella T6 comes in 5w40 only?

On a separate note, there are no issues with using auto oil in motorcycle?  I thought I read that bike gears can have issues...

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by dasch on 06/05/10 at 12:00:33

depends which one, tiefighter. I used probably all oils there are in three bikes so far. Never had a problem with clutch or anything per se. Now... if it says on the bottle "super extra mollecular additive pack to improve..." - well.. there might be problems.

Yes, 5w during the warm up cycle ensures more oil flow to critical parts, faster.

You want to avoid oil with friction modifiers, you don't need a slippery clutch.
Yes, there are quite a few straight cut gears in the tranny, if fact all of them.  But, modern oils are better and more consistent then old spec dino and syn's a class above that.

We are 1986 technology.  Straight automobile dino is just fine.  What matters is change oil every 3,000 miles.

Rotella 15-40.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?

Klotz MX4 hi performance techniplate,  Reduces friction for less drag, provides smoother, quieter clutch and transmission operation,Extreme film strength protects engine parts from metal to metal contact,Extends camshaft, lifter life,  and bucket life, Improved ring seal for higher combustion chamber pressure and power.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Skid Mark on 06/05/10 at 20:08:23

Rotella 15-40. Good stuff and inexpensive.

Whatever you use don't get the stuff with the friction modifiers. The savage clutch slips when this is used.

Also, frequent oil changes are the best, most effective, and cheapest P.M. you can do. I usually change it around every 5000km. By then the bike is also telling it needs to be done.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by bill67 on 06/05/10 at 20:15:57

Just because a S40 is a cheap bike doesn't mean you should use cheap oil.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Oldfeller on 06/05/10 at 20:53:51

Yes Verslagen, I know that all us biker types asked Shell to have Rotella syn rated for JASO (because it met and exceeded all the JASO specifications and could be rated thusly) but it primarily is, was and always will be a diesel formulated oil which makes it "other" for this survey.

Remember, it also meets every other "other than two stroke" engine specification in the world, I mean just look at the jug spec listing fer crying out loud.  Is there a spec it misses? (other than energy star which we really don't want)

I think it is "Other" as in simultaneously less expensive and better performing for our particular 1987 vintage designed motorcycle engine than most oils out there.

Not that all the other oils won't work -- I firmly believe all modern non energy star oils will do the job of keeping our stock engine going because it isn't very highly stressed at all in a pure stock configuration.

==============

Now Bill's Klotz oil is definitely "Other" as well because it CAN be used in a two stroke engine -- or in a skeeter fogger style "oil boiling Savage" of which we have more than a few of here on the list.

How is that Klotz working out for you?  Does it still boil away a half quart a month like the other oils or is it sticking around better?

You do realize that if Klotz works out better for you we will have to let Bill claim it to be the "Supreme Savage Oil of all oils" don't you?

I mean, it covers all Savages -- even them heavily customized high mileage oil boiler skeeter foggers.

And it doesn't smoke and it smells good while it does it too ....

;D

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Skid Mark on 06/05/10 at 21:24:03

I use cheap oil because I'm cheap not because the bikes cheap.  Why would I spend $8 for a quart of oil when a less expensive oil works. I'm sure the expensive oil does all is it says, but the cheaper oil does the job just fine.

The case of klotz awaits the heat.  [smiley=evil.gif]
The give it a definite test, I'm continuing RotSynT6 until there's evidence of oil usage.  And I've been keeping my speed down, hard as it maybe, I have to keep it to a half grin for the sake of the Rot.
Besides the darn motorchipies have been watching.  One even shook his finger at me the other day.  dam I was only doing 65 indicated  ::) lord knows they weren't.

Klotz makes both 2 stroke and 4 stroke oil,I use the 4 stroke, some people here think they only make one oil,In the last 2000 miles I haven't used a 1/2 cup of oil.Its worth more than the $10 a quart, cheap insurance.I like the cooler running and extra power you get.

Liqui-moly car dino is making my clutch stick, sux.
And usually anything below $20 for 5 quarts the savage will boil.

Paladin's right:
"We are 1986 technology. (most) straight automobile dino is
just fine.  What matters is change oil every 3,000 miles. "

Personally never had any problems with:

- yamalube
- motul
- rotela t
- mobile 1
- mercedes brand gas/diesel 10-40w
- diesel and marine diesel motor oils I find quite good 4 savage
- never tried amsoil but then again im not into cults either  :P

I dont make 3,000 miles before I start seeing an increase in oil consumption. Maybe it has something to do with my riding style, revving it higher in the gears, chopping the oil up, busting the polymeric chains up,, owell,, I decide when to change oil, not based on mileage, but on oil usage. When it starts using oil at an accelerated rate, I change it.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Oldfeller on 06/06/10 at 06:12:42

Since I began to use Rot Syn combined with the supermagnet metal removal I know I can go a full year between oil changes and be good oil-wise.   I don't even pick up any increased oil usage between changes.

But since I put in the performance cam I am changing the oil twice a year anyway and putting in a ZDDP booster on top of that, mainly because I know I am abusing my oil a lot and I don't like fixing the engine any more than I have to.

I am also putting together a complete spare engine, so I have one to drop in so I can ride while I fiddle with the other one.

I have pretty much quit hopping the engines up now as my gas mileage really is taking it in the neck due to me being able to run the pure tee snot out of it at will.  Gas mileage counts some too you know and after you get up to very good performance you begin to get satisfied with where you have gotten to.

Getting even more radical might get you up towards the REX stage where your engines stay down a lot of the time.

But still   --   I like it .... like it .... yes I do !!!

Even at 35 mpg for running around town type mileage.

Yup, magnetic drain plugs and other magnet systems are GREAT!
After that you just have to worry about aluminum shavings but they're
softer and will do far less damage, plus the savage filter works well.

I also don't program my oil changes, fresh oil is always a small/smart
investment. I go by color, smell, after looong high speed trips and the
clutch also has a way of telling you when it's time.

I don't put a lot of miles on per year so the standard motorcycle grade 10/40 has done all right by me. I agree with Stimpy that the clutch will tell you long before oil consumption!

Now Bill, your engine is stock and you ride fairly conservatively.

You don't have to do anything extra to your bike or your oil, good old plain jane standard dino oil would likely do for you just dandy.   The fact you use a very fancy racing oil is nice, but is not really needed for the low stress you put on your hardware.

Performance engines running high lift & high duration cams and spinning up to over 6,000 rpm do have stress requirements for oil that your bike really doesn't have.

I meet my increased oil requirements using a high performance synthetic oil.  The high lift cam's maker has elevated ZDDP requirements that I meet with a ZDDP booster to get up to the 1850 ppm of ZDDP that is what is recommended by Webb Cam.

My 8 year old Savage is still fine mechanically and I have posted pics of unblemished internal parts in my cam rebuild Tech post, but no I don't expect to see 30-40,000 miles out of that high performance engine without having to replace the tappets.

(our stock bikes don't always get 50,000 normal miles before consuming a set of tappets either, but don't let that bother you any).

But no, you and your bike will out mile me, I am pretty sure of it.   You could do it with plain old dino oil like Serenity did.

When Verslagen (who does have a high performance modified engine) finds that Klotz fixes his "heat boil" oil usage problems then we will all acknowledge that Klotz is a superior oil that has proven itself.

But until then, it is simply a very expensive racing oil of unproven magical properties.

... and I will likely tease you about it periodically and you will tease me back.

.... I mean, really Bill   -----    the stuff is RED   ;D

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Oldfeller on 06/06/10 at 14:05:25

I've never had to replace my fork oil, so I wouldn't know.

Being cheap, I wouldn't mess with it unless it was broken.

Mine have adequate dampening resistance and seem to function OK.

So your forks move up and down with Zero resistance now?

How much did you pay (with shipping) for ?? how many ?? ounces of this miraculous red fluid from Klotz?

(correct answer was $10.00 for a 32 ounce bottle with free shipping)

Now, please don't take this wrong, but I have heard of people using the appropriate weight of power steering fluid or Dextron ATF to do this exact same job -- and heck, it's all RED colored too.

They said it remained the same too, just cheaper.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Oldfeller on 06/06/10 at 14:48:52

No, just a light tannish color as it pours out of the big blue jug.   Jug is right purty though.

Doesn't smell good like Klotz when it burns off in your skeeter fogger and it will make your brake rod get sorta brown if you don't give your bike a bath occasionally.

You have to drive all the way to WalMart to get it, and it can't qualify for a mortgage credit since you don't have to finance into easy payments like you do with a case of Klotz.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by bill67 on 06/06/10 at 14:54:39

Walmart! It must be made in china,Watch out for the lead in it.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by WD on 06/06/10 at 15:39:08

I have to run ZDDP boosters in my pickups' oil. Not enough zinc in modern car oils to prevent flattening the lobes on standard non-roller camshafts.

Our bikes (5) take the following as preferred engine oils: Savage 20W50 dino juice, Walmart brand or Rotella; 800 Intruder 10W40 Syntech or 15W40 Delo; project 1957 Panhead 50 weight winter, 70 weight summer, aircraft grade preferred; project 1963 CL72 Honda ND20, ND30, ND40; 1964ish Benelli 2 smokes for the 1971 Rickman standard gear oil, 85W140.

Fork oils? Intruder has whatever crap was factory fill in 1996. Honda has the stock fish oil based goo from 1963, what little it might still have in there anyway. Savage has Castrol Dexron 2 ATF and works better than the stock fork oil. Panhead takes NLGI type 2 grease, bike has a 1930s Knucklehead springer front end. Rickman has no forks, gave them to a friend for his 350 Ducati single, but had whatever was stock in Bator forks.

I'm not spending big bucks for oil that gets changed before it gets too toasted. I tend to use our used bike oils to top off my leaky 1969 Dodge truck's 318. When the bike starts missing shifts, the oil gets changed. Too clean for the oil recycler, regardless of mileage, go figure.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Oldfeller on 06/06/10 at 15:46:49

I save the used oil for chain saw bar oil and for lighting brush fires.

(synthetic oils burn about like fuel oil, you can light trash splashed with them with a match very easily)

No lead Bill, they added some extra phosphorous and zinc compounds, no added lead.

Title: Re: What Motor Oil do you use?
Post by Oldfeller on 06/07/10 at 03:45:49

Bill, you is gonna confuse people teasing me about that brake fluid. Brake fluid is a mix of glycol and alcohol which is NOT good for for anything except brake systems.

Automatic Transmission Fluids (red Deltron I, II, & III) are specific weights of light petroleum oils with certain additives.   Power steering fluid (if red, there is some blue stuff out there now-a-days) is once again light petroleum oil with certain additives.  When used in forks, the additive packages are unused and mostly meaningless as there isn't anything in a fork's action to oxidize the oil, etc.  The oil's weight is everything when used in a telescopic fork's dampeners -- jest so it is red light petroleum oil instead of that light blue God knows what it is new style stuff.

People have been putting red ATF & red power steering fluid (in the correct weights of course) into their forks for 50 plus years with no known bad effects.

Putting brake fluid into your forks would be a bad thing, however.

==============

If you have a stock bike then plain old Valvoline 10w40 4 stroke motorcycle oil will do her jest dandy for a whole lot of miles.

I have on my desk right now an engine that ran stock normal dyno oil for 56,000 miles and would have run even longer if it hadn't had an oiling system event that had nothing to do with the oil used.

NOT HAVING OIL PRESSURE (low idle speed) is likely what kills the majority of our heads over time.
Simply running out of oil is what kills most of the rest our bikes as a short term thing.

Not which oil is used.

Moral of the story is HAVE OIL IN YOUR BIKE !!   Keep your idle speed over a thousand rpm !!
