Title: top speed....
Post by aphico on 06/05/10 at 05:06:00

I took my bike on the highway,  It seems that 70-75 mph was all it had,   I'm not complaining,  just curious,  It sorta felt like it should of had more, but,  but i guess not.  It feels like it's running fine,  pretty smooth on accell and at idle,  (no missfire or back fire or hesitation)  it goes right up to 65-70,  but then thats about it.  clutch still feels like it's slipping,  only at top end though,  Pulled out on a hill and the tire spun out nice.   It has that "poof" everyone talks about,  sounds like when you shut the grill off....

Should be better.  I can merge onto the I-105 at 65 mph in third, can be remind me to 75 mph into fifth, and can match traffic on So.Cal. at 80-85 mph.

We have a few riders here that have broken the 100mph barrier, but not on stock bikes.
I have modified my intake and exhaust to get much better flow through the engine, and I have larger main and pilot jets. I hit 80mph pretty quickly with lots of throttle left.
These are amazingly simple machines that have lots of potential for improved performance. In the stock configuration they are pretty anemic.

For no wind situation, it seems you are 5-10 mph slow,....unless you are a big guy, or a large windscreen.

I couldn't get it into fifth,  It doesn't like to come out of first either.  sorta sticks,   that got better with new oil for some reason or maybe just using it after sitting so long.   Oh if i get it into fifth gear, it'll do better than 75.   thats exactly what it feels like,  stuck in fourth.  I just thought these were four speeds.

it's only a four speed,  man i got excited for a minuet.

Your 4 speed has a taller High Gear than my 5 speed, IIRC.

I have a stock 2009 S40.  I have wound it out probably a half dozen times.  It has topped out anywhere from 85 to maybe 98 (a bit hard to read the speedometer closely at that point but the needle was definitely brushing the 100 mark).

I don't recommend this practice given the vibration, etc...just saying...csr

Fifth gear, laying on the tank, no fenders, no muffler, stock jetting netted 115 mph after a 2 miles build up.

15 inch apes, full FLH rear fender, stock front fender, dirt tracker tank, cut down seat still nets me top speeds faster than I-5 traffic. No speedometer, so no idea what that would be. Local PD "Your speed" radar wagon shows 28 mph top speed in 1st gear...

The Savage is all about taking advantage of low end torque. Over tighten your belt (factory setting is overtightened), dump the clutch while grabbing a handful of throttle and these little monsters can out wheelie a repli-racer. I don't recommend it due to the lousy fork seals, but the bike will surprise you.

Bone stock, my bike would do 100mph... Now after just a few tiny things it maxes at 105mph (as matched with my buddy's R1).

Mine is K555 140/80 stock size. When it's new she barely makes it above 90, when it's almost worn out she does 95.

Real speed doesn't change, tranny just spins a bit faster because tire diameter is smaller (covers same ground).

Post by aphico on 06/05/10 at 14:18:35

I checked the tire pressure,  put it up to 42lbs.  and gave the clutch cable another 1/4 turn and i'm up to about 85-90 now.  couldn't really see the speed,  eyes were watery.   thats fast enough for me.  thing handles alot better too.

I looked at all the teeth on the belt all look good,  but it sqeaks like it's too tight.   I don't have the tool,  they want in the clymer manual,  is there another way to adjust or what should i be looking for.  if it was a chain,  i would say it's okay,  about 1/2 play.  but it sounds tight when i push it.   oh.  and what the hell are "sticky's"

Stock gearing w/stock tire, 97mph at 6500rpm redline with 5speed... (if you can reach redline in fifth, which you probably can't)...
With 140/90 profile tire,... 102mph...

look up LS650 Savage here...

I've cruised at 80 on I-17 in Arizona with my wife sittin' behind me---all stock except for an exhaust that I custom made.

Mine will break any speed limit in the USA.Just this morning I was doing 45 mph in a 35 zone. ;)

Stock 98 (see sig)

My nerves and I have only reached 83 mph, wasn't sure what the top end speed was and didn't want to break her... but at 83mph she still has power to give.

That day I cruised for about 35-40 min doing 80-83mph.
She had no problem hanging at that speed on a nice day.

I'm about ready to test again it again, now with new oil, tires front and back (140/90 on back), petcock, and throttle cable. Just need the weather to get better. Up coming week the rain is gone with predictions of sunny and about 75-80.

I bet she does 97...I'll keep an eye on my rpms and see if where she tops...

Sounds like too much pressure in the tire to me, but you know what it needs I guess..

Belt adjust is some voodoo & some art & some science.. many ideas here.
IDK what a sticky is..

Wouldn't that mean the speedo is gonna be off? In this case showing slower than it is?

i have the stock rim, can u put a dif size tire on it?

Belt tension is best when it's pretty loose.
grab the belt on the bottom about halfway
twist it, if you can twist it 90° then it's right.

belt squeal is usually from misalignment
lift wheel up
spin and watch belt
if it tracks right, tighten right
spin the wheel the other way and check belt.

-3% vs +2% not much difference
when I put d404's on, and calibrated a VR1 speedo, it said the speedo was dead on.  But I didn't check at redline, to busy with other things.

see,  ya just gotta, love the experience on this site.  belt is  way tight,  could even twist it 30 degrees,  but it has up and down play. about 1/4 or so.  teeth all look real good,  but it seems dry,  if that matters.

I can't really get the jack under this bike nice  I'm just gonna pick it up and put a block under it.  and try to see what the belt does. but it's way hard to push in neutral.  almost like the breaks are dragging but i don't think they are,

Toooooo tight... :-?...

Post by aphico on 06/06/10 at 14:09:24

alright now that was a little bit of a job.   I got it off the ground  I spun the wheel and the belt held to the left,  no matter what.  so i loosened every thing and turned them back till it didn't touch and i could twist the belt in the middle 90 degrees.  It stays in the middle now,  but it's way loose  up and down play is about an inch or more.   I also turned that clutch cable adjustment again another half turn and theres nothing left.  but man it screams now.  almost too good to be true.  clutch lets out about 1/2 in off the bar.  front end wants to come up and i wound it out on the parkway,  speedo definitely went all the way around.  maybe not 100,  but over 90.  kinda scarey  probably won't do that again.  just nice to know it's there.

Post by WD on 06/06/10 at 16:29:02

Belt tension is checked with both tires on the ground, bike on the kickstand... And as long as it doesn't hop out of the pulleys you're fine. Dry with shiny edges is normal.

Only stickies I know about are the thread permanently parked at the top of each section...

Back on topic, I had mine up to around 90, with some twist left in the throttle.  That was pretty much bone stock, just a HD muffler, and a turn or so out on the carb.  She'd have gone faster, but I lost my nerve! :o
